Under the Andes was written by Rex Stout years before his creation of the immensely popular Nero Wolfe series of novels, and while perhaps his future writing style is still blossoming, certainly his knack for weaving a fantastic tale of mystery and adventure will have most readers anxious for the next phase of adventure at every turn.

Reminded me of some old science fiction movies and books of the 60's that I remember well and ENJOYED! I think if you like science fiction, and think of "soylent green" and "time traveler" you will love this book.

This tale of adventure from New York to Europe, Colorado, San Francisco, and the Andes, is interesting by the very fact that Rex Stout wrote it. In fact that is why I bought this book in the first place. However, it is nothing like his Nero Wolfe, Alphabet Hicks, or any other character that populate his other works of fiction. After having read it through about four times in 5 or 6 years, I have found it fascinating and interesting. Fascinating in it's being so different. Interesting due to the sheer fantastic imagination of the world created.

Granting it will never be compared to H. G. Well's classic tales, it is almost as surprising in the world one finds below ground. Whether you have already read other Rex Stout books, or this being your first time, it will keep you turning pages trying to understand the world into which the three main characters have fallen (literally).

One final word. If for any reason this book isn't for you, and you like detective fiction, buy, borrow, or in any other way, get hold of a Nero Wolfe story and enjoy the world you find within its pages. Beginning in 1934 through 1985 (when a completed book was found among his papers and then published, to the bliss of Nero Wolfe fans), Stout wrote dozens of books and shot stories, so much so that you will have years of reading ahead of you. Its a world you will want to visit time and time again.

As a Nero Wolfe fan, I was looking forward to this despite the poor rating others have given it. I mean, it's Rex Stout. Come on, how bad could it be? Well, as it turns out, I should have trusted them. To be generous, I gave it two stars because it starts well, the characters are intriguing, and as a short story, it might have worked. As a full length novel, it soon became boring and the little twist at the end was not enough to save it. Yes, I read the whole darned thing hoping it would get better, but in the end I was speed reading just to get through it. Don't say you weren't warned.

This is a terrible book. If I wasn't such a Rex Stout fan I would have stopped reading after a few pages. The main character is an arrogant, self-satisfied guy. The main female is a femme fatale who has to be helped because- well, because she's female. . Bah! The younger brother is less intelligent but honorable. The whole thing is stilted and stiff and ludicrous but somewhat typical of the times.

Wow, this was a really very different book from what I am used to reading from Rex Stout! I really loved it. Reminded me of some old science fiction movies and books of the 60's that I remember well and ENJOYED! I think if you like science fiction, and think of "soylent green" and "time traveler" you will love this book. Someone reviewed this long ago in a newspaper and did not like it . .... well, I have been having trouble putting it down in spots*.... a little bit, of it a "little hinky love story" at times is questionable ( that is why the 4 stars).... BUT on the whole, a great book... He really was a very good writer. This being "not his usual thing" it remains a really GOOD READ!

Couldn't believe this was a Rex Stout novel. Boring, never-ending saga of three unlovable and unremarkable characters as they journey across the pond, across America, down the Pacific coast and ultimately under the Andes (where they have endless fights with cave-dwelling Inca critters). Total dribble.

Find it hard to believe that Rex Stout wrote this... the story was not my cup of tea and I can't see how I managed to finish it thru. other than I adore Rex Stout and plan to read every word he wrote! whew... glad that's over! shoulda been a short story ;-)

I am entranced by the Nero Wolf stories,and can barely believe that the same man wrote this inane tale.
It would be a story for children if not for the incessant killing by the protagonists The plot is tired, the action repetitive and unbelievable. Don't look for anything like the cleverness of the relationship of Nero Wolfe and associates.

Many other reviewers -- who, like me, are huge fans of Stout and of his wonderful protagonist, Nero Wolfe -- have appropriately slammed this early work by Stout. It is pretty dreadful. The only reason I award it 2 stars rather than 1 is out of respect for Stout himself. Virtually all of the Wolfe books (and I have read every one of them) would get 5 stars from me, so a 2-star rating for this novel is quite a comedown. But, at least it was free, so the only thing I wasted was my time!
