After enjoying my first Operator #5 story I picked this up thinking it had the famous 'Purple Wars' 13-part saga. I wish I had read the listing more carefully or I would have realized this is just a fan-fiction summarizing the stories. Written in an 'in universe' style this book presents itself as a history of the invasion and conquest of the United States by the fictional Purple Empire and how, led by Operator #5, America is eventually liberated.

Filled with typos and purple prose, the History of the Purple Wars really serves no purpose. There are better summaries available online (wikipedia for one) and anyone interested in the original stories can buy them as ebooks.

The one part I found interesting is at the end when Stievers breaks character and offers his assessment of the Purple Wars saga and addresses some weaknesses in the story. It's a good review but does not make this purchase worthwhile.

I can see how the History of the Purple Wars might have served a purpose 10 or 20 years ago when the original stories were impossible to find, but now... It's just not worth your time or money.

I also note that the illustrations refered to in the other review are not included in the Kindle version.

I have the first edition of this work, put out by Fading Shadows in 1991.

This edition is so much better, production wise, thanks to Print on Demand.

What this work is is a creation of the fictitious history of the "Purple Wars" from Operator #5. But I may need to explain things.

Operator #5 was a pulp hero published by Popular Publications. The hero was a secret service agent, who fought against many sinister foreigners, wanting (and trying) to invade the US. Unusual for pulps, they published a 13-part series detailing the invasion, conquest, and liberation of the US by the "Purple Empire". The "Purple Empire" was a fictitious European power (apparently based on Nazi Germany), who had conquered most of Europe and Asia, and decided to conquer the US.

As the series went on, the pulp novels' cited from a fictitious "History of the Purple Wars" by Harrison Steine. Tom Johnson basically created this work and is the real author.

In addition, they have include scans of pulp covers and interior artwork. A great book and companion to reading the "Purple War" series. (which I think is still available in Adventure Houses' Pulp Review/High Adventure zine).
