Ralph Hammond Innes CBE (15 July 1913 – 10 June 1998) was a British novelist who wrote over 30 novels, as well as children's and travel books. Innes was born in Horsham, Sussex, and educated at Feltonfleet School, Cobham, Surrey where he was head boy and later at Cranbrook School in Kent. He left in 1931 to work as a journalist, initially with the Financial Times (at the time called the Financial News). The Doppelganger, his first novel, was published in 1937.

He was short and dark, a long face with a long beak of a nose and big ears, high cheekbones - not exactly ugly, but definitely an odd appearance, his hair black and somewhat lank. He was wearing jeans and a T-shirt with Greenpeace on it, canvas shoes on his feet. He seemed very agitated and I thought at first it was because Miriam had gone.

PART I. The Golden Playboy. But it was the faded photograph of his father that remained most vividly in my mind, a photograph of his father as a young man, with a drooping moustache, braces and a battered hat, standing against a rickety wooden sluice box that was half-covered in snow and ice, holding in his hand a panning dish, his mouth wide open and his teeth.

A character and landscape rich novel in the traditional Hammond Innes model. Perhaps a little too long and I felt the plot was slightly the wrong side of credible.

Also by hammond innes. We halted at the top of the gangway and stood waiting whilst the bitter wind blew choking clouds of ore dust in our faces. We just stood there, numbed and cold, watching without curiosity as Rankin climbed the ladder to the bridge where Captain Halsey paced to and fro.

When Tom Halliday--the playboy owner of an invaluable stand of red cedar timber--changes his will and suddenly disappears, Philip Redfern, Halliday's English solicitor, sets off for the Pacific Northwest to investigate the estate
In High Stand by Hammond Innes, the protagonist is Philip Redfern who has established a thriving law practice as a solicitor in Ditchling, a small community in East Sussex, England. One of his more eccentric clients, Tom Halliday, owner of a gold mine and a vast acreage of tall timber in British Columbia, arranges with Philip to change his will. A few days later Tom's wife, Miriam Halliday, arrives at Philip's office with the shocking news that Tom has vanished and she is going to British Columbia to investigate. Soon Philip realizes that Miriam has vanished too! And so the adventure begins...Philip leaves for British Columbia to solve the mystery. He is driven more out of love for Miriam than out of concern for Tom. Philip soon finds himself in way over his head as he becomes embroiled in an increasingly complicated, and increasingly dangerous, situation. Can he find Miriam and Tom? Can he himself survive in the isolated backwoods of British Columbia?

I consider Hammond Innes to be a good, not great, adventure writer, not because of his writing which is good, but because he may be a bit too realistic. Like everyday life, there are sections of High Stand that are simply extended conversations or rather tedious descriptions of everyday mundane tasks. I felt like I was reading a real life account with too many details. An account that was only occasionally punctuated with short, abrupt action sequences. Unlike authors like Raymond Chandler who can pull off such long "non-action" sequences through the sheer poetry of their writing, Innes is too matter of fact to hold the level of excitement during his descriptive forays. If you are in the mood to take an unhurried travelogue with Innes then you will probably enjoy this story. However, if you are looking for white knuckle action on every page then this is probably not the story for you.

I liked it-like all Innes books, it seemed very real to me. I have most of his books, this is one of my top ten
