"The Bootlegger" is, IMHO, the most entertaining novel yet in the Isaac Bell series, but, like one of my favorite films, "The Untouchables," is a somewhat hypocritical guilty pleasure. I consider them both " hypocritical guilty pleasures," because in both cases the heroes are enforcing Prohibition, which I consider to be one of the most evil and unjust laws in American history. And in both cases, at least one of the Prohibition-enforcing somewhat hypocritically partakes of illegal booze in-private (Sean Connery's Oscar-winning Jimmy Malone character in a scene "The Untouchables, and in the case of "The Bootlegger," Isaac Bell enjoys an illicit bottle of champagne during a dinner scene with his lovely wife Marion Morgan Bell). But in both cases, the characters are so entertaining, and the action so exciting, that I can't help but like them anyway.

And at least Isaac Bell later redeems himself when he admits that Prohibition is a bad policy: "If you want to believe in something, try this: Prohibition is killing the country. Why don't you join up with the society women trying to repeal it?" (p. 372) Bravo, Mr. Bell.

And besides, it's still easy to root against the main villain, Marat Zollner, the titular "Bootlegger," as Zollner's more than a mere alcohol smuggler, he's arguably the most despicable villain yet in the Isaac Bell series: a Bolshevik, an agent of the Communist International (Comintern), plotting to use the proceeds of his black market gains to attempt to destroy our free market capitalist system. The only good communist, is a dead one.

"The Bootlegger" has the most fascinating character development of the Bell series; it's the first of the novels to be set in the post-WWI era, 1921 to be precise, and the plot lines take a sobering look at the effects of the Great War on the Van Dorn Detective Agency, both the financial effects of the War on the Agency's business solubility, and the physical and psychological effects of the Van Dorn employees who fought in it. A lot of the old Van Dorn supporting cast members from previous novels return, including the ravishing German Fraulein Pauline Grandzau. It's also cool to see new additions to the Van Dorn team, including recently-discharged Coast Guardsman Asa Somers.

Millionaire heiress turned Bolshevik sympathizer Fern Hawley makes for an intriguing character as well; this guilty liberal NYC rich girl shows that the Limousine Liberal/Cadillac Communist syndrome that is so common with the present-day Hollywood Left and in political circles is not a new phenomenon.

From a firearms enthusiast standpoint, it's fun to see the Thompson submachine gun play a pivotal role in the book, and it shows interesting timing on Clive Cussler's and Justin Scott's part, as 1921 was the year the first major production model of the "Tommy gun" was produced. One technical nitpick I have is on p. 293 wherein the authors incorrectly refer to it as a "Thomas .45." Another technical nitpick is a gunfight scene wherein the good guys shoot live grenades out of the hands of the bad guys; that's as ridiculous as the calls by modern-day bleeding-heart liberals for police SWAT snipers to "shoot the guns out of the hand" of hostage takers. BALDERDASH!! Speaking as a military and law enforcement veteran myself, I can tell you that if something is attempting to blow you up with a grenade, you don't waste time trying to shoot the weapon out of his hand, you use deadly force and shoot 'em in the center of mass (whether in the torso or the head)!!

Fun read nonetheless, with the breakneck pacing and eminent, virtually impossible-to-put-down readability I've come to expect from Cussler over the years.

Some hypothetical Central Casting ideas for a would-be filmic adaptation (a suspension of disbelief is requires here, as several of my theoretical casting choices are either too old or too dead to play the characters here):

Detective Isaac Bell returns in this great new book.

Set during the Prohibition era of the 1920s, Isaac and the other members of the Van Dorn Detective Agency are facing their biggest challenge yet in the form of Marat Zolner. Zolner is a Comintern; a Bolshevik group who has infiltrated the United States to spread Russian Communism and destroy the American capitalist structure. Now, Joseph Van Dorn, head of the agency, has been shot and Isaac Bell is given the task of finding out who shot Joe as well as cracking the case of the Cominterns. Acting as a bootlegger to cover for his plot to overthrow the American government, Zolner is the toughest character Bell has faced.

As the story grows, Bell will be led to New York City, Detroit, and the Bahamas in his pursuit of Zolner and his cohorts. Will Bell be up to the challenge, or will Zolner succeed with his plan?

I'm a big fan of Clive Cussler, and the Isaac bell series is one of my favorites. As with the preceding books in this series, "The Bootlegger" is packed with fast-paced action and adventure. Cussler has done a fine job of introducing characters that are believable along with a story packed with history and intrigue.

I highly recommend "The Bootlegger". As with other Cussler books, it is fast-paced and will keep you guessing right up to the end.

What a great adventure penned by Cussler and Scott. If you haven't read any of Cussler's Isaac Bell Series, you've missed some great writing and even better reading. This is a set on the edge of your chair adventure featuring Isaac Bell and all of his side kicks from the Van Dorn Detective Agency fighting against racketeers, bootleggers, Russian Bolsheviks, in New York, Detroit, Miami, Germany, and the Caribbean, during prohibition. The Russians want to cause a revolution in the United States and use everything within their power to cause America to fall.
If you don't enjoy reading this little adventure, you don't like to read historical fiction at its best. Put your seat belt on and try to keep pace as Cussler and Scott weave this story of intrigue.

This is probably the best of the Bell Novels.

Life in the prohibition era East Cost, attempted murder of the head of the Van Dorn agency, corrupt Detectives and Police Officers, Bootleggers, Anarchists and Pre-World War II Germany. How could it not be a great read?

One of the best Isaac Bell stories because of the great research on the Bootlegging business by Clive Cussler woven into the story.... I had no idea of the scale of smuggling by Bootleggers with their high speed boats running the gauntlet of Federal picket boats, or the fishermen risking their boats and lives by sneaking back into their harbors with a couple hundred cases of booze instead of fish. Great characters including my favorite Russian evil dude who was smart enough to fool everyone by pretending to be a penniless ex-Russian Count, and boyfriend to a rich, snotty American woman. Was he making millions off the bootlegging business to fund an American revolution overthrowing the government, or just stuffing his own pockets..... you won't know the answer till the final chapter.
