The Thief's Journal is perhaps Jean Genet's most authentically autobiographical novel, personifying his quest for spiritual glory through the pursuit of evil. Writing in the intensely lyrical prose style that is his trademark.

The Thief's Journal (Journal du voleur) is a novel by Jean Genet. It is a part-fact, part-fiction autobiography that charts the author's progress through Europe in a depoliticized 1930s, wearing nothing but rags and enduring hunger, contempt, fatigue and vice. The main character encounters bars, dives, flophouses, robbery, prison and expulsion in Spain, Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Nazi Germany and Belgium.

The Thief's Journal, Jean Genet's iconic and groundbreaking novel, is one them. Jean-Paul Sartre wrote an immense book on the work of the author Jean Genet, explicating from it a literary expression of the existential hero. Genet found love, poetry and lyricism in prison, drawing pride, triumph and reason for glory in the admittance and acceptance of his weaknesses. As such, I'm sure that Genet's work must be read numerous times to fully grasp its layers of artistic vision, beatific prose, and philosophical meanderings.

This is a review of the Kindle version of the book, not of the book itself. I began reading the book on Kindle and found that some of the sentences didn't make much sense. When I compared it with the hard copy version, it was apparent that the optical scan for the Kindle version has caused the problem. One example of what I suspect are many -- on Page 47, Kindle says: "Hoping to counter the evidence, lie resigned himself and stretched out on his bed only to get lip again and search in places where he had already looked." Hard copy says: "Hoping to counter the evidence, he resigned himself and stretched out on his bed only to get up again and search in places where he had already looked." You can probably figure out what's meant in the Kindle version, but I abandoned the effort and went to the hard copy. Just saying.

I've read the Japanese translation of this book several times some years ago. It is a well known fact that western languages are so very difficult to transltate into Japanese language, but this book did not seem to suffer as much as others.
It is intellectually very satisfying, the language is exceptionally beautiful, and more than anything else, it is very gentle.
It does not have many dialogs, and not a story, since it's a journal, but it's a very readable book and easy to follow even for someone like me who can only read books in a story-telling format.
If you feel like something gentle, this book is a good companion.

A wonderful book, which turns moralities on their head, and sucks you into the sweet and bitter world of the author.

In my humble opinion, this is the best of Genet's works. I am very grateful to the publisher for the creation of this digital edition.
I found the translation very satisfactory.
