by Miss Read

Mrs. Pringle of Fairacre. I have been the head teacher of Fairacre School for more years than I care to remember, and the school house, where I write this, has been my home for all that time.

It is particularly snug at the moment: the fire blazes, the cat is stretched out in front of it, and Christmas cards line the mantelpiece. Very soon the school breaks up for the Christmas holidays, and what a comforting thought that is!

Miss Read is certain of one thing-she won't be forced to hire grumpy Mrs. Pringle to straighten up her house. Mrs. Her neighbors also remember Maud Pringle's little-known benevolence, like the time she knitted mittens for poor Joe Coggs.

Miss Read gives Mrs. Pringle a soul! In this book we get a much deeper look at Maud Pringle's soft side, a tender side that isn't often seen. She responds to a cold, poverty-stricken child by knitting him mittens. Though she highly disapproves of her mentally-deficient and promiscuous niece, Minnie, Mrs. Pringle helps the young woman and her illegitimate children. And Maud is deeply moved when she hears of the death of an employer who had been very kind to her in her youth. Written with dry, delightful British humor, Miss Read continues to entertain, educate and even move us as we visit the mythical village of Fairacre.

I have to admit that the other reviewer is correct, and that this book does string together episodes from some of the other books, so that some of the ground covered is familiar to readers of the series. Since I give her other books five stars, I dock one star for that and rate this one a four. As a lover of her Fairacre series (above even Thrush Green), I have to admit to a soft spot even for this book just because it makes Mrs. Pringle more human and easy to understand. It gives some of her backstory that's not covered elsewhere, in terms of her growing up years and her early married life, that make it somewhat easier to understand the character's gruffness and lack of empathy. It also tells a few stories of her exhibiting a rare soft spot for an underprivileged child, for example. If you've never read Miss Read, this isn't the place to start. But if you've exhausted the rest of the series and still have a craving for more Fairacre, it's definitely better than going without.

I am reading my way through this delightful Fairacre series, and from the beginning the character of Mrs. Pringle stands out as my favorite character. Mrs. Pringle is the daily cleaning lady for the Fairacre village school, but she is so much more. She is a moralizer, a gossip, a tale teller and the bane of Miss Read;s, the head school teacher, life. Mrs. Pringle always has something declarative to say on every occasion and always seems to know the village scuttle-butt. She and Miss Read have had many tiffs and more than a few days that were spent in less than companionable silence.

This volume of the delightful Fairacre series is dedicated to our favorite anti-hero, Mrs. Pringle. We learn more about her early life, her marriage and her long years in our beloved village of Fairacre. This is one of my favorite books in the series so far.

I love all the Miss Read books and this one provided background on a grouchy character.
