The Children's Story" is a 4,300-word novelette by James Clavell. It first appeared in Reader's Digest (June 1964 issue) and was printed in book form in 1981. It was adapted by Clavell himself into a thirty minute short film for. It was adapted by Clavell himself into a thirty minute short film for television which aired on Mobil Showcase. The story takes place in an unnamed school classroom in the United States, in the aftermath of a war between the US and an unnamed country. It is implied that America has been defeated and occupied.

Published by Thriftbooks. With its roots in words we have taken for granted for years, Clavell forces us to look at all we, as Americans, hold precious, and how vulnerable we are without truly understanding the meaning of that which we espouse.

About The Children’s Story. He writes, "The Children’s Story came into being that day. It was then that I really realized how vulnerable my child’s mind was -any mind, for that matter-under controlled circumstances. Normally I write and rewrite and re-rewrite, but this story came quickly-almost by itself.

James Clavell The Children’s Story. The children rustled, watching her, wondering what possessed her. They saw not the gray hair and the old eyes and the lined face and the well-worn clothes. They saw only their teacher and the twisting of her hands. the teacher was afraid. And the children were afraid. He watched the classroom door with hate. Johnny looked away from the door and watched with the other children. He did not understand anything except that the teacher was afraid, and because she was afraid she was making them all worse and he wanted to shout that there was no need to fear.

Great little book that provides a glimpse of what happens when we allow ourselves to forget what our country was build on and what can happen if we do not stay firm with the democratic ideas and laws the USA is built on. Never let our guard down, because the future will be changed if our children are set above by laws, values and ideas that are the building block of the USA.

I knew about this book years ago, but it was out of print. In our time we are constantly being bombarded by useless facts. We are not asked to think nor do we have time to think as our phones almost constantly announce a text, tweet or some other distraction that keeps us from knowing the truth or each other.

This book subtly but surely scares me about our present and future that is being molded most often silently slowly without our awareness. Stop and look around, read, research, find the answers yourself. Don't let someone else guide you without asking why. I recommend this book.

This book has been a favorite of mine for many years. I first discovered it when I still had small children attending public schools. I picked it up in a book store, read it through before buying it. I took it home and read it to each of my children as they came home from school that day and then read it to the family at bedtime that same night. I have read it a dozen times over the last 30 years or so. I think this story should be read by every parent and then read to every child. There is a potent message in this story that should not be ignored. Children should not be required to memorize things and repeat them without knowing what they mean. Neither should adults for that matter.

This is a WOW book that can be read in just a short few moments. Those few short moments will change the way you think about just letting anyone teach your children...our children. In any community, state or nation, the precious gift of children given to us by a loving Creator , all of us have a responsibility to protect them in a world that has gone, in many ways, ballistic. I first read this book several years ago, and distributed many copies to friends---recently, I have ordered again, and am letting others know about it. Most all of us were blessed by James Clavell's "Shogun"...(I am Japanese and Irish!)....if you were blessed by that wonderful novel...Please, please order THE CHILDREN'S STORY.

I found this book very disturbing. Disturbing in the simplicity and the reality of it. I won't give away the story line but to say I see this a warning of what is being played out in much of the world at large. Yes the technique could be used for good but, and that's a big but, more than likely will be played out the way the author's example depicts. Political, religious, cultural paradigms are all targets for those with pliable minds are are at great risk. You see it everywhere if you just open your eyes and look. For most of us this quick read will open our eyes forever.

When I was 10, my mom and I saw this movie on television about the power a teacher or any well respected adult who comes in contact with children may have over them. We still talk about it today, 25 years later, such was the impact this story had on us. Today, at a seminar for teachers, the guest speaker started by reading a short story and as he read I remembered this movie. Yes, the movie I remembered was adapted from this story. The book was just as gripping to me as an adult as it was when I was young. I won't go into details. Its a short read but very thought provoking. I discovered the story was published in the 1960's, but I think that the questions can be applied to new contexts in today's world. Love it or hate it. I'm sure that it will inspire you to think.

This is only a 30 minute read but will scare you deep in your heart to see how easy it would be brain wash your children and grandchildren. With what is going on in the world today this very easily could happen.
This is a chilling short story. Written in a single sitting based on an experience with his daughter. How easily a child's understand (or anyone who hasn't been trained to think) can be manipulated. How often has it happened to you?
