It’s as famous as a play by Shakespeare and it is written in alexandrines which are to French classic theatre what iambic pentameters are to Shakespeare. Lots of famous quotes and expressions come from this play. So, it’s not surprising that it’s part of school syllabuses. I read Cinna afterwards and already can’t remember the slightest thing about it). I can’t bear plays with rhyme – even Shakespeare annoys me when he slips occasionally into it – but you usually find an English translation, like for this, that doesn’t rhyme.
