This book is, of course, a familiar and well loved classic by Jules Verne. I decided to read it (after over 50 years!) as a way to maintain my rather rusty (assez rouille ?) French. I am glad that I did, because this is still an amusing story and Verne uses a reasonable vocabulary that did not have me looking up words too often. I have read both versions and have seen the movie (more than once), I enjoyed reading the French version best. I am really enjoying reading this book in the original French and an English translation at the same time. I am able to understand most of it and it's really cool to read some of the things that were omitted from the translation. I really like the dryly humorous tone of the original.

Jules Verne knows how to write a fast-paced adventure with French tomfoolery and English sprats. This book is, of course, a familiar and well loved classic by Jules Verne. I decided to read it (after over 50 years!) as a way to maintain my rather rusty (assez rouille ?) French. I am glad that I did, because this is still an amusing story and Verne uses a reasonable vocabulary that did not have me looking up words too often. That was fortunate, because I found the interface to the dictionary somewhat clunky; I assume that is the dictionary's problem, not Jules Verne's. Deep probing of the characters' psyches is not part of Jules Verne's style. Rather, they are exemplars of certain quirks, especially quirks associated with "national character" such as English reserve (Fogg), French all-around Coolness (Passepartout), etc. His depiction of Americans and America is reminiscent of Mark Twain, a contemporary. Overall, I enjoyed this book, enough to get the complete works (! ) of Jules Verne, which also is available from Amazon.

You can't beat the original of an excellent work like this. In my mind, there are some things lost in translation. For instance, the following passage:

Et d'ailleurs, avec les habitudes d'insouciance des Américains, on peut dire que, quand ils se mettent à être prudents, il y aurait folie à ne pas l'être.

Is translated in English (by American George Makepeace Towle) as:

It may be taken for granted that, rash as the Americans are, when they are prudent there is good reason for it.

This translation is an excellent one that works better in English than a word-for-word translation from the French would. In French though, the sentence reads more like "And besides, with the Americans' tendencies to be so carefree, you could say that when they are prudent it would be crazy not to follow suit."

You really do have to change words to make it flow better in other languages. This is not a critique of the English translation. But doing this makes you lose some of the author's original intent. It's why I really feel the original wins out!

In my mind "there is good reason to be prudent" and "it would be crazy to not be prudent" are not quite the same. The playful American teasing that Jules Verne included gives the text part of its personality, part of its edge; but this is easily watered down in English versions.

Check it out and enjoy it in the words the author himself had written. I was lucky enough to be reading this while in Hong Kong overlooking the port where one of the scenes took place in Verne's mind. One of my favourite ever reading experiences!

Simply delightful in the original French. Light, breezy, humorous. Adventurous to be sure, but also satirical as Verne pokes fun at the phlegmatic English and the passionate French. As always with Verne science is the real hero that saves the day in the end. A true timeless classic.

This book is an abridged version of the original in a special collection from Hachette entitled Lecture Facile (Easy Reading) and it is 77 pages long - Level 1 out of 3 with 3 being the advanced version. I used it in a level 4 French class and found it to be very useful for teaching purposes. The entire text is written in the present and the compound past so it is a great beginning reader useful to motivate inexperienced readers of French. The story is a delight and the relationships between the characters is what held everyone's attention. It is apparently timeless as all of the students commented that they loved this book. I rate it four stars because I like the full version so much better. But again, this is a great beginning reader.

El problema con estas ediciones gratuitas es que nunca se sabe si están completas o no. Pero hay que reconocer; sin ellas y el Kindle nunca habría vuelto a leer estos clásicos de la literatura francesa. Un excelente libro, por si…

I really enjoyed practicing my high school French (from 32 years ago). I do wish there were some vocabulary tools that would work in conjunction with ebooks. Still, it was a great read

What can I say? You already know the story. Another of the books I suggest you read in French, if you can.

If you like Jules Verne novels and you can read French, you will enjoy this Amazon book. The French edition has a flavor not found in translation. I have read both versions and have seen the movie (more than once), I enjoyed reading the French version best. Much of the author's feelings get lost in translation.
