The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. It is set in the 1840s in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived as a boy. In the novel Tom Sawyer has several adventures, often with his friend Huckleberry Finn. Originally a commercial failure, the book ended up being the best selling of any of Twain's works during his lifetime.

Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel that can be considered autobiography as it is based on the experiences of Mark Twain. The book wasn’t written at once. The first part was written in the winter of 1872, the second part in the spring of 1875 and the final part in the summer of the same year. Due to the simple style of writing, with a lot of storytelling and humor, the novel is interesting to children and adults. The author wanted to remind adult readers of their childhood. The narration in the novel runs linearly without parallel actions.
