Abbe Jules, first published in 1888, is the second part of Octave Mirbeau's autobiographical trilogy and tells the story of a priest's lifelong struggle with his passions. Narrated from the viewpoint of a small boy, it depicts the stifling atmosphere of petit bourgeois, provincial France, where family, education and religion conspire to produce individuals tortured by repressed desire, violent fantasies and forbidden lusts.

Mirbeau's superbly controlled period piece is, accordingly, both a keen portrayal of the idealism and solipsism of youth and a welcome reminder of the genius of a writer who has probably always been rather seriously underrated. Sebastien Roch is a portrait of a boy's psychological, sexual and political coming of age in provincial France against the background of the Belle Epoque. We follow Sebastien as he enters a Jesuit college as a natural, upspoilt, innocent child and develops in a corrupt, disillusioned, tortured adolescent until his senseless death at the age of twenty-one on the battlefield.

I first discovered Octave Mirbeau when I was on a sort of "French thing" in my reading, I have read his other novels "the torture garden" and "diary of a chambermaid" and it baffles me why he is not as well known and loved as Camus, Satre or Balzac.
For the record I thought this novel was better than "the torture garden" but not as good as "diary of a chambermaid" which is still my favourite from this author.
The story deals with an innocent young boy named Sebastien Roch who is sent to an expensive and prestigious Jesuit school by his father who has ambitions to climb the social ladder. At the school he is abused, bullied and almost destroyed as a person before finally being expelled in disgrace.
It's worth noting that the author was a radical anarchist and loathed all forms of institutional authority that made people into machines. One gets the impression that the author spent a large part of his life disgusted with the normal people and society around him. That disgust was focused into a literate rage that makes his novels such subversive reads even now.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading that is radical and thought provoking.

Not my favorite Mirbeau book but worth the read. I think it tells you more about him as a person, than it tells a good story, which to some may be equally interesting.

It is a crying shame that so excellent a novel has been completely overlooked, at least in the English-speaking world. This is a fine translation, appearing 110 years after the original French edition. It would be a great mistake to see in this novel a mere fictional account of something that apparently happened to Mirbeau himself in his school days, with Father de Kern based on the real Stanislas du Lac. This is not merely a novel about Catholic child molestation, not merely an anti-clerical novel. It is in fact, as Pierre Michel has pointed out, an anarchist tract which attacks all of the enemies of radical individualism, all forms of authority and conformism, all forms of spiritual murder. It is as valuable to us today as it was to the French in 1890. There is no introduction to this translation, but if you know French, there is an enormous archive of material on Mirbeau available on the internet.
