WAITING FOR CHILDHOOD By Sumner Locke Elliott. THE book begins with a single, isolated, declarative sentence: ''There they were. 'Waiting for Childhood'' deserves to be celebrated as well. It seems most apt for what follows. 'There'' turns out to be Australia - before, during and after World War I, a period when that increasingly fascinating continent seems to have arrived at a particular sense of itself as a nation distinct from Great Britain. It offers an unusual number of attractive characters, a many-stranded plot and an affectionately ironic, occasionally luminous style as ingratiating as the people he writes about.

Sumner Locke Elliot books (except for 'Careful He Might Hear You') are not readily available in the United States. After enjoying 'Careful He Might Hear You", I wanted to read more of his writing. Amazon had this book available and I am glad I bought it. Again the story is set in Australia in the early 20th century. The author creates a family of characters who all share the same parents but grow into adulthood as unique but connected human beings.

I never cared about the 7 children or their future. It was boring.
