Historical fiction has always been a solid bet for me, so I tried out Wives at War by Jessica Stirling. First off, the author Ms. Stirling in actuality is the male Scottish writer Hugh C. Rae. As a general rule, I shy away from reading the longer novels, and this one that clocks in at 475 pages is a long novel, at least for me. But the story unfolds nicely and at a snappy enough pace to qualify it as a "fast read". Wives at War is marketed as a historical romance, though I didn't encounter all that much "romance" in its storyline.

Born in Glasgow, Jessica Stirling is the author of twenty-five novels, many with Scottish backgrounds. She has enjoyed a highly successful career as a writer, beginning with the bestselling Stalker trilogy. Her most recent novel is Shamrock Green, which is set during the First World War in Dublin and France; other recent books include The Wind from the Hills--shortlisted for the 1999 Romantic Novelists Association award--Sisters Three, and Prized Possessions, in which the Conway sisters first appeared.

Much of the bomb damage had been cleared from the streets, riverside fires extinguished, bridges reopened and trams and buses were running almost normally. Two nights of heavy bombing had dented the. Clydeside’s defences but not the pride of its people. What had been strengthened by the severity of the mid-March raids was communal unity; what had been lost was the illusion of invulnerability, the vague, swaggering Glaswegian belief that pugnaciousness and hard-nosed stoicism would keep old Adolf at bay. Polly and Christy travelled into town by tram.
