It's the only place the girls can find relief-they're banned from the new, clean swimming pool the white kids use.

Jewel (Oprah's Book Club). Enjoyed this book, well worth the time. Breena Clarke is an excellent storyteller. While River, Cross My Heart brims with metaphorical significance, particularly the many references to the Potomac, the novel would benefit from a more cohesive narrative. In her debut effort, though, Breena Clarke delivers a worthwhile offering. River" is filled with wisdom sayings and reflections on cultural traditions of Blacks from the South.

Much information about Georgetown I didn't know beautifully described. And then very familiar and touching glimpses of inner feeling that were quite moving. I really enjoyed this book.

I always read oprahs picks. This one was ok, but not one of her best. I felt sad for Johnnie, I am not sure she ever fully grasped her sisters death. I think it haunted her. That may be why she thought she saw her sometimes. I think her mother was a strong woman. I thought the author was very good. I liked the way she used words and prose. I will read any other books she writes.

This is my second reading. The writing is so genuine that one believes the author actually lived the story. The characters speak to me so authentically as real people, speaking, acting and responding as authentic human beings and the story itself does speak to one's emotions. Excellent read and a great book for discussion.

Some of the history was unknown to all of us in the book club and therefore interesting. It is presented in an interesting way.

River, Cross My Heart never goes anywhere. It does an OK job of being a slice of life book. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a plot. The story wanders through the life of a young girl named Johnnie Mae whose younger sister drowns in the Potomac River. After a moderately interesting beginning, the book falls flat. We never really get to know Johnnie Mae. The author teases us with small insights into the characters and then leaves us in the dark.

This book was recommended by a friend because of the interest I life of Washington DC at the turn of the century. It was very descriptive of that life. I would recommend this book. The seller actually was on time with the delivery.
