1. This was not what a bereaved husband was supposed to say when his wife lay disemboweled on the bedroom floor in a pool of her own blood. The man was still wearing overcoat and homburg, muffler and gloves. He stood near the telephone on the night table, a tall man with a narrow face, the vertical plane of which was dramatically broken by a well-groomed gray mustache that matched the graying hair at his temples.

What bothered him so much? For detective Carella the journey is just beginning and the answers to all of his questions will take time and patience.

Sadie When She Died (87th Precinct series First Published: 1972 Leading . I remember reading SADIE WHEN SHE DIED back in the Seventies.

Sadie When She Died (87th Precinct series First Published: 1972 Leading players: Steve Carella, Bert Kling, Meyer Meyer, Arthur Brown, Peter Byrnes. It is Christmas 1972 and one evening prominent lawyer Gerald Fletcher comes home from work to find his wife has been stabbed. I haven’t read many of the McBain books, but this one was short sharp and memorable. You’re right about it being one of the best books in the 87th Precinct series. Amazingly, it achieves its greatness in just a couple hundred pages.

Number 26 in his 87th Precinct series, Ed McBain continues his unique style. Out of the blocks, a man's wife is brutally murdered, the man admits he is glad, a suspect is quickly identified, arrested and confesses; end of story, right? Not on your life's, this is Ed McBain, remember. Detective Steve Carella has a suspicion, Bert Kling is in love again (with the wrong woman), seemingly irrelevant episodes, bits of humor interjected here and there and a surprisingly unsurprising (almost) conclusion, to name just some of the elements of this novel. But Hey! It's McBain.

It's a good old detective story. Enjoy it.

This is a very interesting story about a police officer working a murder case that appears to have an easy solution but as he works the case he starts to think there might be more than meets the eye. The characters have interesting lives which adds to the interest level of the book. There are several subplots which fit nicely with the plot and add to the story. The book is worth your time and money.

Sure! You have the detective Steve Carella. You have a wife who is vey dead and disemboweled (for certain). You have her husband who is quite delighted at her death.
You will discover her husbands lover (certainly). You will of course discover a love affair of sorts involving another detective. You will or will not discover who the killer is. A bit of a surprise - Kudos to Carella....
Very fast reading. I LOVE McBain!

Though written so many years ago, the 87th Precinct series are classics. Like all series, some books are better than others. This is a good one.

Most of the book was fine, but I could tell that this was written before he had fine-tuned his writing. The ending was too abrupt.
Exellent
I have read many books by Ed McBain and have enjoyed yet another book. He can entertain you while keeping you in suspense with the read. How he gets you to the end shows you how thoroughly he gets you there. I have enjoyed his books.
Another perfect murder and solution for the team at the 87th precinct to pull off. McBain does not disappoint his fans.
