DANGEROUS LOVER continues Maggie Shayne's spectacular series, The Oklahoma All-Girl Brands. Maggie Shayne has a strong sense of her own spirituality and she incorporates some of those beliefs into DANGEROUS LOVER through Selene. This is not a preachy novel, however, but one of acceptance and tolerance.

Secrets and Lies 0373272596 248pp 2002 Synopsis: Former Secret Service agent Alex Stone was the best of the best, so impersonating missing foreign dignitary Thomas Barde seemed easy. Convincing the world that rough-and-rowdy Melusine Brand was actually Katerina, Thomas's ultrafeminine bride and the president of Tantilla's beloved daughter, was another story. Or so Chicago cop Jimmy Corona thought when he returned to his Oklahoma hometown and ran smack into Kara Brand. All Jimmy wanted was to find a mother for his son, someone to keep little Tyler safe while he took down his latest perp.

Former Secret Service agent Alex Stone was the best of the best, so impersonating missing foreign dignitary Thomas Barde seemed easy. Convincing the world that rough-and-rowdy Melusine Brand was actually Katerina, Thomas's ultrafeminine bride and the president of Tantilla's beloved, was another story. And while Alex was not stranger to difficult assignments, hiding his history with Melusine bordered on impossible. Physically, Melusine could have been Katerina's twin, but the resemblance ended there - something Alex was grateful for when their simple plan turned dangerous. As they tangled with terrorists in the Texas desert, Alex wondered not only whether a future without Melusine was worth living, but would they survive to see any future at all?

I loved this book. The story itself is very complex. And by that I mean that one moment you'll find yourself laughing so hard, and then in the next you'll be biting your nails down to the nub. And sometimes you'll find yourself doing both of those things, at the same time. The suspense in this story is one of the best I've read so far. Sure you know that the main characters will survive somehow, but it's the long journey getting there, that intrigues me the most.

I've already read the Texas Brand series, and all but one of the Oklahoma Brand series, as well as, the McIntyre series, but out of them all it's Wes, Selene, and Ben that intrigue me the most with their super powers. They never let on, or brag about their special abilities to anyone, other than to each other. Of course their family members know about them, but they're not completely convinced either.

Of course Mel has always been my favorite female kick-*ss character. She's more deadly than most men. I also love the way that she says what she thinks, and never apologizes for her actions. Of course she takes after her mother, but I'm not sure her mother even lives up to what Mel is capable of doing, unless it involves her family.

I was introduced to the Oklahoma Brand series when I downloaded the freebie 1st book introducing me to Maya's story. I rather enjoyed it & as is my creed, I bought the next book to not only thank the author but to continue the enjoyment - Edie's story entertained. (After reading the first book & getting the background the books can be read as standalones). But this 3rd book about the tough as nails Mel was at times cringe worthy, too far fetched & the characters unlikeable. I skimmed through to the end. I would recommend that you give this book of the series a miss, possibly reading the 4th book instead because it has had the effect of stalling me purchasing the next in the series.

I often brag on Maggie Shayne and The Littlest Cowboy just gives me more to talk about. Shayne flawlessly combines all of my favorite attributes in a book. She gives us a lot of amazing characters with great personalities and physical descriptions. Then there is the deep suspense, a ton of action, and a great romance. When Shayne tells you a story, you’re there. You can feel the tension and smell the gunpowder.
The book and the entire series are “romantic suspense” so my warnings for them seem obvious. There is graphic violence, a lot, in many forms. Also, it contains graphic language and some sex. The sex isn't extremely graphic, nor is there a lot of it but it is there. Last, this is not a light fun happy read. It's tense and emotion packed. I know I had a tear or two come to eye.
The Littlest Cowboy is the first novel in The Texas Brands Series. The Series revolves around the Brand family, brothers Garrett, Wes, Elliot, Adam, and Ben and their sister Jessi and a bunch of cousins. I really loved this book, and want to get the rest of the series! Oh, and this was a FREE download for Kindle on Amazon.

**UPDATE 3/17/15** I have now read this ENTIRE series and I love all of the book as much as I did the first one. Each book brings you a new story with new love, tension, and suspense but still involves the other characters as well. Each book can be read stand alone, but you will want to read them all!

I've been jumping around between both the Texas Brands and the Oklahoma Brands. So far that tactic hasn't caused any conflict. Secrets and Lies came close though ;)

Secrets and Lies featured two of my favorite characters from both series... Mel and Wes. They could both probably be considered the black sheep of each of their immediate families to some extent. Wes definitely more than Mel, but she still stood out from the rest. Vidalia Brand had raised all her daughters to be strong and independent. Mel took that to the extreme. She considered herself the family's protector. The strongest and sometimes even the meanest (if she or anyone she cared about was crossed.) No one messed with Mel and no man was brave (or dumb) enough to attempt to tame her. Until Alex, then he realized he respected the strong, independent, feisty Mel more than the tame version.

Alex may have been born and bred in a totally different world than Mel, but that didn't mean he didn't appreciate the woman she was, regardless of how well she hid it. There was definitely a humorous side to Secrets and Lies, but there was a heart warming one as well. This book had everything I've grown to love about all the Brands' books. My only complaint is that I wish there had been a little bit more.

As I mentioned, Wes played a big role in Secrets and Lies and so did the rest of the Texas Brands. This is the first book that the Brand families reunite and it turns out that they have a lot more in common than just blood. There are 'fences' that need to be mended and a few more secrets that are begging to be revealed. Needless to say, there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end of this book. So many that I'm not sure which series I should jump to next. I'm tempted to go back to the Texas Brands and finish it up until it leads me back to the Oklahoma Brands but I'm not sure I can wait to see what happens next. *sigh*
