Marriage and Other Games is a complete page-turner, kept my interest throughout and I loved the way the characters - who were so different from each other - came together. Usually with these types of books you can kind of guess what happens at the end, not with this one. SPOILER ALERT: Dont read on if you dont want to know what happens in the end.

He seemed to be keeping a deliberate distance from Charlotte, who was bewildered by his hostility. As soon as he got home from work, he went up to his office, only coming out to pick disinterestedly. at his supper before disappearing again. She didn’t interrogate him. She knew he had constant targets to hit, that it was a competitive world and if he didn’t keep one step ahead he could easily be replaced. He was best left to wrestle with his problems alone. He’d plough his way through it eventually, and emerge smiling

Veronica Henry is easy to read. The book is first-class chick-lit and a great beach read.

Veronica Henry is easy to read. However, with some sympathetic fleshing-out of her characters and more concentration on heart and content rather than style, she could have lifted her novel into a higher literary league.

Listen to books in audio format. Veronica Henry has worked as a scriptwriter for The Archers, Heartbeat and Holby City amongst many others, before turning to fiction. Her fourth novel, AN ELIGIBLE BACHELOR, was shortlisted for the RNA Novel of the Year Award. Veronica lives with her family in a village in North Devon, where she has recently learnt to surf. When Charlotte Briggs' husband Ed is sent down for fraud, she cannot find it in her heart to forgive him for what he has done.

Love this author; but sort of disappointed with the storyline. You have a small town setting with celebrities and locals interacting at the pub. The main character escapes the city and personal problems and lands in this town where she finds herself. Nothing new, nothing really interesting or funny. I did finish it, but it left me wanting something more interesting.
Enjoyed this book -easy reading and interesting characters.I enjoyed the descriptions of the English countryside and the community of the village.
Good pacey story with well drawn characters. Could have done a bit more with the plot but all-in-all an enjoyable read.
Marriage and Other Games is the fourth stand-alone novel by English author Veronica Henry. Sebastian Turner, bad boy of the British art scene, in the throes of artistic block, under pressure from his wife, TV's "agony sister" Catkin Turner, to produce work to maintain their image, is holed up in his family home, Withybrook House, drinking the local pub dry. Charlotte Briggs, home renovator for the rich and famous, finds herself suddenly homeless, jobless, and friendless when her husband Ed embezzles the funds from a charity fund raiser and lands in jail. Gussie, the only friend who has stuck by her, suggests she renovate a family cottage in the Exmoor village of Withybrook. Local Withybrook stonemason, Fitch fears for his marriage to Hayley, the beautiful daughter of the oldest Withybrook family, the Politmores, when she takes up with the obscenely rich ex-boxer and thug, Kirk Lambert, citing a need to escape, but Fitch is determined to save his young daughters, Jade and Amber, from their mother's excesses. Penny Silver, divorced mother of teenaged Tom and Megan and GP in a nearby village, hopes to find someone to share her life after Bill. What do these four rather different people have in common? Veronica Henry throws this unlikely crew together in a remote village and lets the chips fall where they may. This novel has an original plot with quite a few twists and completely unpredictable outcomes. Henry crafts her characters carefully, with enough detail to give even some of the lesser characters depth and complexity. The dialogue is authentic and the village atmosphere is well conveyed. This is probably Henry's best yet.
