Crown in the Heather is the first book in the Bruce Trilogy that retells the story of the First War of Scottish . Never did I feel Robert the Bruce's burning desire to lead Scotland. In fact it seems he more often speaks of being a coward and feeling sorrow for the hard choices he's had to make.

Crown in the Heather is the first book in the Bruce Trilogy that retells the story of the First War of Scottish Independence (1296-1328) and how Robert the Bruce united the warring clans of Scotland and won independence for his people from the English. This novel covers the period from 1290-1306 and the narrative alternates between 3 different viewpoints: (1) Robert the Bruce, (2) James Douglas (Bruce’s lieutenant and friend) and (3) Edward, Prince of Wales (son of King Edward Longshanks ).

THE BRUCE TRILOGY: BOOK I)In 1290, Scotland is without a king. Robert the Bruce is in love with Elizabeth de Burgh, daughter of an adherent to the ruthless Longshanks, King of England. Two families-the Bruces and the Balliols-vie for the throne.

This author has such a talent for taking her readers back through time, back to the times when the english throne, the power of the english king was...out of control, and those other countries surrounding England were subjected to the whim of the King. These were the times of Robert Bruce. Proud, intelligent and set on freeing Scotland from the rule of England..and its king(s). Father to son; both just as cruel and arrogant; the lives of others of no consequence..this author does such an excellent job of taking the reader right there. I am a long time lover of history, especially as it has to do with the Celtic nations as each had to deal with the greed of the english; their lands, their rights, everything to be given over on the whim of a half mad boy/king who grew up with a father who disliked his tastes; especially since this prince, soon enough to be king, was so influenced by his boyhood friend/lover. Even though forced to wed, it didnt come with happiness..but this is the story of his worse nightmare; Robert the Bruce; who through grit and determination; made Scotland free of english rule, for a time anyhow. This, is the first book in three that revolves around the life of the King of Scotland; his determination and struggle to free the people from cruel english rule. I was not at all familiar with this author when I got this first book, but since this, have purchased the other two books in the series and in less than a week, am well into the last book..and not a bit of it is fill-in, heaving bosom type writing. Noo; this is history. This is the way of things in dangerous times; when the Kings of England and France bickered and fought, but one eye had to be kept on the unruly Scots, let alone try to deal with the Welsh uprisings and the Irish too. ahhhh, these are the kind of books you can just curl up and vanish into and I am pleased to share my feedback here. If you, like me; love to curl up with a well written book on ancient history, read about the people who created their own history; grab all three in this series. (and I just spotted another series by this same author, I'll be buying next; I am HOOKED). so, grab all three books, a cup of tea, find your comfortable spot to curl up and vanish into a time long ago; that is based on facts..real people, real emotions;..people who if you're like me; you'll recognize the names..what an excellent book, a great trilogy, am now on the reading list so when new books come out, I will know. Being a fan of such as Margeret George, and Jean Plaidy, this author is right there; holds you, keeps the pages turning and 330 pages or so; just isnt enough; good thing there is book two, and three, eh??? Excellent, excellent reading; so glad I found this trilogy, just took a break long enough to come online to tend to some things, including leaving this well deserved praise for these books; and off to probably vanish into the final book on "The Bruce"; King of the Scots.

The last paragraph of the Author’s Note explains why I found this book so terribly interesting. I owe my Scottish roots to my paternal Grandmother. However, title of this review also defines my connection to Scotland because we were supporters of the English Crown in some of the big battles. Enough of that walk down genealogical highway.

I found this book worthy of a Five Star review. The characters are extremely well defined and the story moves along at a steady pace. The author maintains this steady pace by smoothly transitioning from one side of the conflict to the other. I found the author’s use of multiple narrators allowed me to feel that I was accurately living both sides of the conflict.

The author so deftly describes the background environment that I shivered in the rain as Robert Bruce and I ride across the country side on our journey to the throne of the King of Scotland.

Reading this book took me back to the roots of my Scottish roots and I would recommend that you add this Historical Fiction to your library without delay.

While I understand the conversations and other personal interplay is fiction as this is historical fiction, author N. Gemini Sasson has written a terrific book that helped me understand what life was like in the 14th century. Her writing was more meaningful for me as it helped me place my distant relatives, and their family relationships, as I am distantly related to Robert the Bruce through his daughter Marjorie. I recently discovered this genealogical bit of history and am trying to learn more about Scottish history.

As to the book: The narrative can be a bit confusing as sometimes it's not truly clear who is telling their part of the story. You may have to read a few paragraphs to realize whether it is Robert or James for example telling their part of the story.

Overall, the book tells a tale of how the Scottish people tried to gain back their country. It tells about the sacrifices made by William Wallace, James Stewart, William Douglas and Robert the Bruce as they fought for freedom.

Recommend.

Everybody has heard of Robert the Bruce and 'Braveheart' William Wallace, but few know intimately all the ins and outs of the struggle for an independent Scotland and the establishment of the Scottish royal line of succession. This book is written in an open and direct style, in the first person from alternating viewpoints, making it easy to read. This succeeds admirable in clearing up all the shifting loyalties in Scotland as well as in England, by presenting the characters as real people and not just one-dimensional adherents or opponents, credibly explaining the reasons behind their actions. Having recently visited Stirling, Bannockburn, Carlisle and Berwick, I was able to track the geographical action and easily envision the terrain over which the Bruce fought to win his realm. In light of my other knowledge of Scottish history, this book further enlightened the struggle to unite Scotland's antagonistic families to create a sense of nation-hood and defeat the English overlords. The next two books in the series are 'must reads'.
