If you are a fan of the Slayers anime, then you may enjoy this manga based on the stars of the show. This manga sends Lina and Gourry, the two main stars of the show, into adventure after adventure with their comical attitudes making it all the more entertaining.

The book is short and does not pull you in as much as others, for manga standards, but it is a fun read nonetheless. The artist did a great job portraying the scenes and expressions that make up the Slayers universe. Not as good as the show, but it's its own seperate adventure.

It's not bad but it doesn't really feel like the show. You can tell it was written very early on in the franchise. If you love slayers and want to read everything then go for it, this isn't a bad book.

I'm not sure if the manga came before or after the anime, but the manga feels weak when compared to the anime. Maybe because the humor seems to fall flat in the book? Maybe the action in the anime seems to move faster? The setting and rules of the fantasy world seem to bounce all over. What's the history of the world? Can everybody do magic or just a few people? Slapstick works better on the television than on the printed page. Get it used if you wish to get it at all.

I've seen several incarnations of the Slayers franchise (not all, mind you) and I must say that this is not one of the BETTER ones. It's a manga, and the only one published in the US, yes, but the one-shot stories involved leave something to be desired.
There are two other manga series out in Japan (but not here) entitled Slayers Special (detailing the time of the OVAs and Movies, before Gourry, but with Naga) and another Slayers Manga that is analogous to the anime, covering the first season and others. Though I do not know Japanese (and therefore cannot read them) I have collected several of these, and prefer them to this version. I am uncertain if either of these will come to the US, but I would not say that it is impossible.
Now back to the issue at hand here. Medieval Mayhem (as I said earlier) is a compilation of one-shot stories set during the TV series (Lina is with Gourry) but none of the characters are present SAVE for Lina and Gourry. The stories are good enough, but if you're looking for continuity in a manga (which I tend to like a bit of), this is not what you are looking for. You're better off learning Japanese and buying manga from the other two series.

I have NO idea what in the world that other guy was saying because this is one of the best comics I've read (and I have a large collection so i'm not deprived from good comics!!!) I was laughing almost the whole time!!! Sure it doesn't follow the show exactly...but it's still really good!!! Deprived from Slayers or not you sould get it!!!
Xangeo
Unfourtanetly American publishers chose the wrong manga to publish. This stand alone Slayers manga is not as good as the actual series the TV show is based upon, and is not really worth buying. Look for some better Slayers manga in the future, but leave this one, unless you are truly suffering from Slayers withdrawal.
