I used to always make fun of people that read Louis L'amour, but now I very proudly admit that I belong to that club

Ninety years ago the Toomey brothers, along with twenty-five other. I used to always make fun of people that read Louis L'amour, but now I very proudly admit that I belong to that club. They are just fun, pure and simple fun. The writing is quick and the stories perfectly western. I suppose it's not that surprising that I like Louis L'amour, growing up with John Wayne had me primed and ready to fall in love with western reading. This book was a little different then the others I've read.

Writer Dan Sheridan heads to Arizona to do research. A specialist in westerns (hey, is this going to be an autobiographical novel? Let's hope Louis didn't go through all this for a novel!) Sheridan finds a dead man in front of his motel. And who is that big guy that keeps showing up wherever he goes? Was it that slip of the tongue that brought the rats out of the woodwork? Probably. But he can't just leave it and make it to LA on time for a meeting with his publisher. Noo...he walks right into the face of danger. And does he ever get to see Arizona scenery up close and personal. Me? I would never have grabbed that cedar tree growing in a crack on the side of a cliff. And I would probably be still freezing and frying out on that cliff. But Dan's got 3 allies to help him out--his wits, an old colleague from his military days, and a woman with some guts. So this story was only momentarily a cliff-hanger, but it sure was a page turner all the way.

I read years ago that Mr. L'Amour said if he said a tree was in certain place that it was actually there during the time frame about which he was writing. I don't know if it's true but I love his books. I've been reading them since I was young teenager with strep throat. A friend of the family brought me a couple of L'Amour westerns and a Doc Savage book. I still read the westerns! Great stuff. The Sacketts seem like old friends.

A Louis L'Amour western with a modern setting. His books are always fascinating, always filled with well researched historical information. His characters are resourceful, determined, possess a deeply ingrained integrity and cope with almost insurmountable odds, which eventually they manage to overcome. L'Amour is one of my favorite authors, I only wish he had written twice as many books!

L'Amour moves deftly into the modern western mystery genre. This one is hard to put down
with the usual fine characterizations, action and plot development......Complete with a
Korean War gunslinger and a swimming pool!

Third or fourth time I've read this one. I've read all of Louis fiction books repeatedly. This one I especially liked, because the location is in a district where I worked as a Deputy Sheriff for thirteen years. As they say, when L Amour writes about a location, you can bet that it is there, just as he describes it.

What can a person say? Louis L'Amour is so good that there is really not a bad read written by him. I think this is the second time I have read this one. I still enjoyed the excellent writing.
