Watch out-multiple spoilers below

I read "Infantry Combat: The Rifle Platoon" after reading John Antal's similar book about tank combat "Armor Attacks" where the reader was commander of an M-1 Abrams tank. In "Infantry Combat" the reader leads a Rifle Platoon charged with protecting the flank of U.S. forces in an unspecified Middle Eastern conflict. Various information gleened indicates that this is supposed to be a battle against Iraq or Iran while the more powerful U.S. forces are engaged on the Korean Peninsula.

Unlike the book on armored combat there are as far as I can tell no scenarios where the decisions lead to major victory. There is exactly one that is "1" that is apparently a victory for the readers character. The rest are obvious defeats, death, severe injury or being captured. Perhaps that is what one should expect when you have infantry forced to fight heavy armor with inadequate support of any kind. Not to mention a rather chaotic command situation with the reader character newly assigned to the unit.

Still the book does give a good look at what seems like the overwhelming number of choices available to an infantry commander (none of them good). This is a book where you can as they say "smell the powder".

I felt the book was very hard to pull lessons from. The book format has you making choices about tactical situations but when there is a good or poor outcome, there is very little information about why your decision and the outcome was good or poor.

There are also many times where the author just asks you to roll dice to determine your fate which leaves you wondering what the lesson is.

Worst of all, there is no chapter in the book that has a summary of the tactical situation or situations and actually teaches you how to review the tactical situation like a training soldier would.

All in all, you can barely learn any tactics unless you are willing to make an investment of many hours reading the book multiple times to try to extract information in very small pieces.

Antal's book is an excellent way to pick up many of the basics of infantry combat with out having to risk getting your self or your friends killed! This book rewards sound decision making and punishes mistakes brutally. The tactical details seem precise, comprehensive and accurate. The addition of randomness proves that even good decisions can go wrong (Antal adds this with dice rolls determining the result of some decisions). This drives home the fact that even great soldiers can be in the wrong place at the right time and earn a purple heart. The book is fast paced, easy to read and fun. My only critisim is that it lacked a little detail (especially with regard to specific weapon deployment). Over all, a great read!

...which is why I had purchased this book, that is, thinking it would have something to do with leadership. In this fictional, interactive account, a newly minted West Point Lt is given a rifle platoon and faces overwhelming odds against him. The reader makes choices throughout the book, usually about tactical decisions, which leads the reader down a "decision field," usually to the reader's own demise. This is imaginative. However, the basic principles of leadership are not discussed, other than working together, making sound and timely decisions, maintaining positive communications, and so forth.

An unusual (interactive) and informative way to teach tactics and command of platoon sized units.

I started this book late one night and continued until early in the morning. It is truely "An Interactive Exercise In Small unit Tactics and leadership." As a voracious reader of military history, I've become accustomed to knowing the outcome before I begin reading. This has made me see all the actions of the men who were "there", through the lens of hindsight. At my first attempt to accomplish the assigned mission, I made several assumptions that got me killed only a few chapters into the book. My (false) confidence was shaken. This is the way it works. You play the part of a 2nd Lieutenant, recently graduated from the Miliatry Academy. He's commanding his first Platoon and he faces the same challenges that all small unit leaders face. At the end of each chapter, it gives you several choices to make and you go to the chapter that matches your choice. The choices are not always easy or clear cut. In some chapters you roll dice too decide what course of action to follow. This added element of chance more than once led me in a direction I would not have chosen to go in. I suffered the frustration of having to carry on even though information and options were limited. Just like in real life, I still had too make decisions and preperations in spite of the limitations. As every small unit leader knows, this is normal but very difficult to train for. The book is a great tool for understanding infantry combat and the stresses that a leader faces. It is not just for the novice, I would recommend it too anyone, even field grade officers who have forgotten how combat works at the company level.
Written like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book, Infantry Combat reads like a short story in many ways. What makes it so darned useful (and interesting) is the way that the tactical training is woven into the events of the story. Reading this book is kind of like reading a (very short) Tom Clancy novel (all the technical details you want to glean are there) but you get to pick your path at major decision points. The story itself isn't bad (not that it's great, either but the intense series of events teach you the importance of scouting, reverse slopes, bottlenecks, etc. and keep you glued to the book, which you'll probably go through in a few hours of reading the first time through. (Yes, you're going to want to read it again and try some of the other choices.) When you die the reason is (mostly) explained. You also learn the hard way about the factor that luck plays in war, not that there's much luck in your story.
