She came to them from the sea, and to the sea they returned her. . . . A story of sacrifice and survival in the New World.

Tonina lives an idyllic life on a small island in the Caribbean hundreds of years before Europeans discovered it. But she has always been an outsider among her people. Unlike them, Tonina is tall and lean and light skinned, and her origins remain a mystery. Her adoptive parents had found her floating in a basket in the sea―a sacrifice? A shipwreck? No one knows.

When Tonina turns nineteen, her parents know she must return to the sea so that the gods don't become angry with the village for keeping something that is not theirs. Under the guise of finding a medicinal plant, they send Tonina to the mainland, a terrifying place she can't even imagine. They know, however, that they will never see her again. And here is where her adventure begins. It is a tale of survival and sacrifice, of luck, magic, intrigue, and danger, romance and betrayal, an epic filled with ancient lore, tales of bearded white men who sailed to this shore in giant ships, and discoveries of medicinal miracles in faraway places. But most of all, it's the story of one woman's quest to discover where―and to whom―she really belongs.

This sweeping story of the undiscovered world before the time of Columbus is Barbara Wood at her very best.

Some authors can be counted on to produce a certain kind of story. Treading dangerously close to being a romance without numerous blow-by-blow sex scenes, she writes of strong women in extremely difficult situations. Woman of a Thousand Secrets steps into the lives and inner worlds of said archetypal woman, but includes a man who is confused and afraid in his own male way, two poignant characters who want, as do we all, to be loved for themselves: a Little Person who has seen himself as irresistable until he learns women have sex with him for the good luck they believe it will bring and an elderly teenaged (!) Wise Woman. The settings, the characters, and the ancient Aztec cultural setting is fascinating. The dilemmas are edge-of-the-seat stuff, and the history woven into the story made me feel like a wise insider to the forming of Mexico City. Magical Realism inspires me and gives epic meaning to a story [only about a mile from] Boilerplate. The book weaves tragedy, struggle for identity, multiculturalism and the thoughtless knee-jerk judgements we make in meeting new cultures. Thoughtful interesting historical novel as usual.

Really learned a ton of information about the Mayan culture. It was fascinating. Very well researched and written. This is not a book that you zip through in one evening.

I recommended this book as well as other s that I've read by this author. My favorite is the Blessing Stone. It was a gift from my neice. It led me to see..read other books, like this one. I cannot put it down once I start reading it. This amazes me because I went through some personal problems and stopped reading for about three years. I was bored one day and picked up The Blessing Stone and read it again! Now I have this Kindle, it's so easy to find a book to read. During that bad period of time that I stopped reading, I tried to read other books and it didn't help me to start reading again. It was the Blessing Stone that did it! I thank you Ms. Woods for bringing me out of a dark area in my life to reading again. Thank you.

The other reviews already featured here have covered the storyline, so I won't (besides, I'm always afraid of giving away the ending!). But I've read nearly everything that Barbara Wood has written (including her books as Kathryn Harvey), and she just gets better as she goes. I was enthralled with this story. The only thing missing from it were illustrations; based on Barbara's descriptions of people and landscape, they'd have made gorgeous artwork. This book definitely had a pull to it that made me not want to put it down.

I've read several of her books and like the way she develops a character and a story line. She must do much research
for all the detailing she writes into the story. Enjoyed it much.
