She sat up and switched on the light, told herself not to be such a drama queen ave chosen a better room. Five-star insomnia was guaranteed at La Rocca. Like all the rooms in the house, this one was high-ceilinged, with lofty beams and tall windows shuttered against the chill night air. There was not much furniture, but the few pieces were exquisite: a huge half-canopy antique bed, an eighteenth-century painted wardrobe complete with dancing nymphs and swags.

She became one of the angels of the flood, helping to restore Florence, and in the process she fell in love with the city-as well as with David, one of her fellow volunteers. She also forged a transformative friendship with a local girl, Francesca. But a shattering accident left Francesca dead and forced Kate to return to England. Angels of the flood is the book which draws most on my own experience. Like Kate Holland, I spent some time helping with the clean-up after the terrible flood of 1966. The details of her experience working in the Uffizi and the Baptistry are the same as mine, though luckily her friendship with the Franscesca and the Bertoni Family are entirely fictional.
