FRANCE AT WAR On the Frontier of Civilization. France by rudyard kipling. Ask the wave that has not watched war between us two. Others held us for a while, but with weaker charms, These we quitted at the call for each other's arms. Broke to every known mischance, lifted over all By the light sane joy of life, the buckler of the Gaul, Furious in luxury, merciless in toil, Terrible with strength that draws from her tireless soil, Strictest judge of her own worth, gentlest of men's mind, First to follow truth and last to leave old truths behind- France beloved of every. Eager toward the known delight, equally we strove, Each the other's mystery, terror, need, and love.

Rudyard Kipling is an amazing writer- reading his reports about World War I was very interesting- I loved the way he painted the battlefield. It was nice to hear a pleasant report of the French Hospitality as well. He painted a trying time almost as a greek epic.

IT’S a pretty park, said the French artillery officer. We’ve done a lot for it since the owner left. I hope he’ll appreciate it when he comes back. The car traversed a winding drive through woods, between banks embellished with little chalets of a rustic nature. Further on they sank into the earth till, at the top of the ascent, only their solid brown roofs showed.

John Kipling was reported missing, believed killed, in his first battle on the Western Front. From this time his father, Rudyard Kipling, was constantly in pain from a gastric ulcer. He published some articles of war journalism in 1915, collected as The New Army in Training and France at War. The stories and verse that Kipling wrote at the turn of the century did much to shape public attitudes towards the British Empire and the worthiness of it's purpose
