The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia ) is a long Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed in 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered to be the pre-eminent work in Italian literature and one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century.

I bought this from a library book sale in excellent condition. after viewing several non-illustrated copies I opted for this one.
the picture illustration add so much to the story. my companion saw many of those while on a European tour.
I did not know where all these gloomy paintings were coming from. now I know. many were from Dante's vision of a
spiritual journey we all tred.
if you go to Stanford University there is a sculpture of the gates of hell there, see just after sun set. the evening
light does much for it as it is going through it's changes.
about the book; it is his vision of his travels. being Italian, you see it through his eyes and desires to only talk
to other Italians. I guess he though he would not understand any other language.
three parts inferno, most think of as hell. a land full of thieves, money changers/bankers, politicians, artist, ETC. there is a online video
showing a 1922 B+W silent movie with English subtitles, still free last I saw. a classic in my opinion.

purgatorium; a place where all those go to to do penance prayer.

paradiseio/heaven; the angel stops him there, if I remember right. at the gates of heaven.
