A moving, funny memoir of a wildly unorthodox Bronx childhood in the 1950's--the story of a girl who starts out fatherless, is orphaned at 8, is raised by two extremely odd strangers who happen to be her uncles, and slowly accumulates for herself a strong and--no matter how eccentric--deeply loving family.

This is the story of a young girl who is orphaned early in life. She is raised by her bachelor uncles and a Russian grandmother who deals with her own sets of fantasies. Sexual beliefs of young girl friends and this time era is touched upon from as she grows and hits her teen years. I would like to have heard about her young adult years.

This was a bit of a sad read at times, but I really enjoyed the passionate details the author included to describe her unconventional journey to adulthood. I could empathize with her while she was searching for answers to questions that she never found the answers to. It was an enjoyable story overall, and I recommend it!

a page turner for sure, an enthralling memoir which could have focused on the tragic but instead swings around to give us a funny, delightful, very real account of the days and nights of a young girl suddenly turned orphan, raised by two eccentric uncles. Loved it to the end.

This is one of the best memoirs ever written. This book is a page turner; it’s a memoir that reads like a fast moving novel. Most of us will never know what it’s like to be orphaned by the harsh realities of life, but Laura Shaine Cunningham paints a Daliesque portrait of just how crazy that life can be. The cast of characters in this girl’s life is colorful, to say the least, and the author is unflinching in her revelations of all the idiosyncratic details. Yet in the midst of chaos and loss two angels come to her rescue in the form of two very eccentric uncles. Kudos to you Laura Cunningham for a job well done. Loved it!

This is a fascinating coming of age book that will, no doubt, keep you hooked to the very end.

Alternatively happy and sad, the book breaches conventional wisdom about a girl from the Bronx growing up in years past.

Unusual book that I felt great emotion for the young girl She was cared for her odd uncles and grandmother with dementia. I was left wondering how all this left her as an adult.

A funny and touching book. I really enjoyed it and laughed a lot.
A truly wonderful read. Cunningham’s autobiography (a motherless girl raised by her loving, eccentric uncles) is the original Bronx Tale. I’d read this book before, but just the thought of returning to those pages—and to the people and places Cunningham brings to life—makes me smile. An uncle myself, I hope one day to be remembered as fondly as Cunningham remembers Len and Gabe.
