by William H. With this book, I have neglected my reading and have found myself spending the better part of several evenings looking through this tome. Also wonderful, and along the same line as this book, is "The Oxford Literary Guide to Australia". It is arranged differently, by location and then by townships, and includes hundreds of photos of authors and places.

This the authors of the Oxford Companion to Australian Literature have set out to do for their own country. Their venture, as described in their own words, has been to aim at a work primarily providing ‘entries on authors and literary works’. They decided to scrap an earlier intention not to include living authors or their books – which was wise of them, since ignoring the great expansion in Australian writing since the 1950s would have given the work an oddly unbalanced and out-dated look. Living authors who have established reputations are well represented in the work as it stands. Wilde, Joy Hooton, and Barry Andrews (eds). Oxford University Press, 1994. Retrieved 28 August 2011.

Unique in its field, exhaustive in scope, the Oxford Companion to Australian Literature offers a comprehensive .

What a fabulous, comprehensive, informative book this is! I love Australian memoirs of early settlement as well as "Banjo" Paterson's humorous poetry, the novels of Patrick White, other classic Australian novels such as "Picnic at Hanging Rock", and just about everything I have ever read by Australians, about Australia. In my wildest dreams I never knew there was such a vast array of books, all of which, it seems, are listed and discussed in this book.

The new Companion reflects three major changes in the literary culture: the emergence of Aboriginal writing, the increase in and recognition of multicultural writing, and the great increase in women's writing in all genres.

Unique in its field, exhaustive in scope, the Oxford Companion to Australian Literature offers a comprehensive account of Australian writing from European settlement in 1788 to the 1990s. It presents the most important achievements in the fields of fiction, poetry, and drama, and also covers non-fictional prose in journals, diaries, biographies, and autobiographies, and the impact of key historical events on Australian literature. Fully revised and updated, the second edition contains 500 new entries, bringing the total to 3050, reflects the greater influence and volume of women's and multicultural writing, and includes major new articles on crime fiction and the immigrant experience. Written in clear and accessible language, this major reference belongs on the shelf of every library and every lover of world literature.

Listings are alphabetical by authors and often by a particular book title itself. Research appears to be exhaustive and all-inclusive and unbiased. I love this book! But because of it, I will go broke buying Australian books and will have to live an extra hundred years or so in order to read all of them.

I am using the two books together for a thorough description of authors, books, places, etc. GREAT reading and such fun!

I stil have the copy of this that Hal Falcon gave me in the early 1960's. I recently pulled it off the shelf and saw all the notes he gave me about how to pursuit the study of graphology. My father would not hire anyone for his ad agency without first sending Hal a sample of their handwriting for him to analyze. Once he told my father told him not to hire a very talented copywriter because he was dishonest. My father loved the guy (Hal said he was very charismatic), and the guy turned out to be a real crook. Hal was a wonderful and talented man, and I highly recommend the book.

This is a good book for anyone starting graphology. It's simple and accurate and you can be a fairly entertaining graphologist by the time you finish this book. Hal Falcon's experience is an important factor in determining the accuracy of analysing handwriting. I have learned much from this book for the last thirty years and what it has taught is still relevant today.
