Selected poems ebook

by Louis Johnson

A selection of Linton Kwesi Johnson's best poems over three decades. Ranging from protests against police brutality to eulogies for departed friends and playful celebrations of urban life.

A selection of Linton Kwesi Johnson's best poems over three decades.

Selected Poems of Charles Olson (Centennial Books). But it's hard to see this book as anything less than a vindication of the quiet, steady devotion Zukofsky showed to poetry over his productive life. Charles Bernstein, who's about the best ambassador the avant-garde's got to the publishing mainstream, is a great choice for the project: his selections are sympathetic and smart, aware of the larger work while giving you enough tantalizing bits to satisfy a healthy curiosity

Louis Zukofsky: Selected Poems. Zukofsky is extraordinary reading, and perhaps because it is being published in the context of ‘American’ writers, the echoes of American literary history are difficult to evade. The most formally radical poet to emerge among the second wave of American modernists, Louis Zukofsky continues to influence younger poets attracted to the rigor, inventiveness, and formal clarity of his work.

This is a great selection of poems from the greatest of the dub poets. While all these poems have already appeared in print the original books are difficult to find. If you aren't already a fan, or if you've only heard the records, then this books acts as an excellent introduction to the poems. There is a fine selection of the best poems of LKJ from the seventies, the eighties and the nineties - Dread Beat an Blood, Five Nights of Bleeding, Sonny's Lettah, It dread inna Inglan, Inglan is a Bitch, Mi Revalueshanary Fren, Tings an Times and many more. Of course, as with all such compilations of selected verse, there are some of my favourite poems that are not included.

For those who are unfamiliar with LKJ's work it should be pointed out that he writes in Jamaican patois. If you have difficulty understanding the poems, try reading them aloud or, better yet, search out the recordings of LKJ reciting the poems with reggae backing (something I would recommend even if you can understand the written poems).

Unless you already have all of LKJ's books then I would recommend this book.
