Shadow 81 ebook

by Lucien Nahum

A superb flying thriller that evokes the cynicism of US military men of all ranks after several years of their country's war against South Vietnam (yes, I know it was advertised as being against the North: look what parts of the country were destroyed and people killed, and you'll know which was the real target).

This is underrated book in western world, but a bestseller in Japan. It's an intelligently woven story by a smart author. It has a lot of thrill, twist and humor. Highly recommend.

Read this book many ,many years ago .the plot has always stayed with me . Just had to obtain a copy to remind me what it was that made , for me , unputdownable...now that should be the final word!

A superb flying thriller that evokes the cynicism of US military men of all ranks after several years of their country's war against South Vietnam (yes, I know it was advertised as being against the North: look what parts of the country were destroyed and people killed, and you'll know which was the real target). This story is no anti-war diatribe, but it does leave a clear message about that particular war.

For me this story added the dimension of selecting and equipping a vessel for an oceanic voyage, then sailing the voyage. Lots of good technical details only a boater would know.

For pilots there are the authentic details of planes and flying, both military and civil, plus the details of running an airport in an emergency.

Politicians, as usual, discredit themselves and, here, are put down nicely.

Finally, there is the suspense of a crime thriller.

My question is, as it has since I first read the story in the 1970s: WHO IS LUCIEN NAHUM? If anyone knows, please post Nahum's identity here or Wikipedia.
Revised OCT 2011: I discovered who Lucien Nahum was: [..]

Though dated (it was written in 1975) I found this book quite a fun read. The story cuts to and fro between the search for a vietnam pilot lost in action and what he's really doing while everyone is looking for him. The story was clearly written before full details of the harrier jump-jet were released which leads to some big plot holes but it has some lovely twisty ideas in it.
The cover blurb (...story whose artful misdirection will keep your attention rivetted until the very end.) is true!

Underrated sleeper, but one of the best reads I've had in ages. Unconventional, but terrific plot development. I'm not often moved to rate books here, but this one did it.
