Penelope Mortimer has really not done a great deal to make it matter. Her protagonist goes through life in a trance that sets the reader nodding. In the end, for reasons never made clear, a lot depends on the death of the dog and an inmate's undesired pregnancy. Long Distance originally appeared in The New Yorker. At her best, Miss Mortimer recalls another New Yorker, Penekipe (Gilliatt), and her small truthful observations are worth a thousand planted allegorical ones.
