Autumn in April tells the story of Rosamond Briarley, who left school to earn wages in the fashion world, using her literary skills in the advertising department, when her father became ill. After a successful show in London, she is introduced to an old gentleman, Gaspard MacQueen. As it turns out, he is a former acquaintance of Rosamond's grandmother, Louise. Gaspard mentions that he would like to see his mother's childhood home on the Isle of Wight, and Rosamond, already planning a quick trip there, asks him to accompany her.
