The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club ebook

by Gil McNeil

For a book with a title of Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club, I really expected more about knitting, the knitting group/yarn club and yarn store. It seemed like they were more an afterthought. There were characters that seemed interesting, but needed to be more fleshed out.

Gil McNeil manages to make knitting an integral and interesting part of Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn . In general, the characters in McNeil’s book spend far more time hung over than the average fictional knitter

Gil McNeil manages to make knitting an integral and interesting part of Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club. I can picture the lovely yarn colors & garments she describes. She manages to make the mess & emotions of everyday life funny and interesting, while por I stumbled upon this book purely by accident, and was very pleasantly surprised. In general, the characters in McNeil’s book spend far more time hung over than the average fictional knitter. There’s shagging with a celebrity, instead of the slow development of a meaningful relationship with the UPS guy.

The women meet every week at the shop on Beach Street and trade gossip and advice as freely as they do a new stitch. But when a new man enters Jo's life, and an A-list actress moves into the local mansion, the knitting club has even more trouble confining the conversation to knit one, purl two. The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club is an uplifting, winning tale about the healing power of friendship and new beginnings. It's a charming novel that will delight all passionate knitters-and win over befuddled, would-be knitters, too.

After reading the description and reviews of this book, I thought it would be one I would really enjoy. For me, it was just okay. I was able to finish reading it, but it did not leave me wanting more. One of the biggest detractors for me was the very "English" terms that you had to figure out the meaning of. The foul language was a little off-putting as well.

For knitters looking for a novel about knitting, look elsewhere.

Nothing magic or suspenseful but a simple story that pulls you in from the first chapter... characters that are relatable all revolving around a woman whose cheating husband comes home asks for a divorce and dies in a car accident as he storms out of the house. No spoiler here, as it happens in the first chapter.. not a simple cheating husband story at all... its layered and all about the wife/widow/mother/sole support of her small family - he’s left them in debt -affairs apparently are expense - and how she copes and processes being on her own.

First, I totally agree with those reviewers who were offended by the language in the book. It really is beyond blue in parts, and normally that would mean that I would set the book aside. However, I have to admit that I do not think there is another book that I have laughed at more. Yes, too often the language was cringe-worthy, and that got old. I took a star off for that and debated on whether or not to take another one off, as well. The truth is, though, that McNeil's observations on kids and motherhood were so spot on and funny, that I would be lying to say that I did not find the book entertaining. Additionally, I truly enjoyed the supporting characters, especially the two little boys, and Jo's friends. So, one star off for grating and offensive language (come on, please, Ms. McNeil, you are truly talented, and don't need to use that prop to be amusing), and the other four stars are for brilliant and witty OTHER dialogue.

The characters were believable and interesting. The humor was completely appropriate to the circumstances and caused me to chuckle out loud more than once. This wasn't a book I couldn't put down, and it certainly didn't keep me up at night. It was simply an enjoyable, light-hearted, fun read.

This novel begins slowly but then accelerates so that the characters involve you in their story. Jo, a now stay at home mom with two young boys, is faced with emotional trauma when her traveling journalist husband tells her he's leaving for another woman. After delivering this emotional blow, he departs only to meet a tree and die. Jo has to pick up the pieces of her life, which she will do ably: moving to the small town of her Gran, leaving London, and taking over the small yarn shop which she will make into a good livelihood.
The boys adapt, life begins anew and Jo puts herself together to make a good life for all of them. This is the first of a series and the reader does want to know how things will turn out.

Very enjoyable stories, I ordered book 2 and 3 also. Although I had a bit of trouble adjusting to the long sentences of the main character (it's a different style for me) I adjusted. I am enjoying the definitely "english" tone of the book, and the different ways the characters react than the typical americanized way of behavior, much more pleasant. Good story line and a relaxing read. Will be looking for more of her work.

Jo is reeling from her husband's unfaithfulness, death in a car accident and the double mortgage he put on the house. She now can't afford to live in it and needs to sell and move to her Gran's town. She is taking over her Gran's knitting shop. She is a very good person and tries to be diplomatic with Elsie, who has worked forever in the shop and does not like new ideas. Her brother Vic helps her paint her place along with his girlfriend Lulu. Ellen, a famous TV reporter and best friend comes for visits and calls often. Her gran helps babysit the two boys.
Of ordinary people dealing with life's trials and tribulations. An easy, enjoyable, entertaining read full of endearing, totally believable characters.
