Charles Dickens’ most famous contribution to the reinvention of Christmas as we know it is, of course, A Christmas Carol, which we pointed out last week is the most frequently adapted work in all of English literature. But the story of Ebenezer Scrooge isn’t Dickens’ only story about the holiday. The parallels between the two books are glaring. Charles Dickens' description of the Nutmeg-Grater Inn in The Battle of Life is enough to make any weary traveler .

Charles Dickens' description of the Nutmeg-Grater Inn in The Battle of Life is enough to make any weary traveler yearn for such a comfortable respite: At such a time, one little roadside Inn, snugly sheltered behind a great elm-tree with a rare seat for idlers encircling its capacious bole, addressed a cheerful front towards the traveller, as a house of entertainment ought, and tempted him with many mute but significant assurances of a comfortable welcome. The Christmas books, particularly The Chimes, the Cricket, and the Carol, were the centerpiece of Dickens' public reading tours in the 1850s and 60s with A Christmas Carol far and away the most popular with audiences.

In The Chimes, set on New Year's Eve, Dickens depicts the hardships faced by the poor. In a light manner, he criticizes the hypocritical attitudes that prevailed during the Victorian era. Preaching the virtues of taking pride in oneself and facing the consequences of the choices that one makes, this is a poignant work.
