All you who sleep tonightFar from the ones you loveNo hand to left or right. Vikram Seth (20 June 1952 -, Kolkata, India).

All You Who Sleep Tonight, ISBN 978-0394585161, is a 1990 collection of poems by Vikram Seth. British composer Jonathan Dove set eight of the quatrains and five other poems to music for Nuala Willis in a 1996 song cycle of the same name. The collection is grouped into five sections: Romantic Residues, poems which reflect on feelings of love and their effects, or after-effects.

Vikram Seth's novel in verse, The Golden Gate, was hailed by Gore Vidal as "the Great California Novel" and by the New Republic as "a tour de force of the transcendence of the mere tour de force. This is such a lovely book, poems that are written with simplicity and elegance, generously dipped in emotions and warmth and yes, melancholy.

All You Who Sleep Tonight is an elegant book of poetry that combines the sharp humour that characterises so much of Seth’s writing with darker subjects such as Auschwitz and Hiroshima.

This book of poetry is one of my favourites. My dad introduced me to Vikram Seth, and I've shared his poetry with my friends. If you can find a good used copy, go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Twenty-four years after receiving it as a gift, I finally got around to reading ALL YOU WHO SLEEP TONIGHT. Inexcusable on my part, but at least it wasn't a great volume of poetry that sat on my shelves ignored for a quarter century. The poems are accessible and sincere, but only four of them did much for me.

The fifty-four poems of the book are presented in five sections. The first section is called "Romantic Residues", an apt name as these poems all deal with relationships that never really sparked or have guttered out. The second, "In Other Voices", contains six poems in which Seth adopts the persona and perspective of someone else, for example the commandant of Auschwitz. Another poem in this section -- "A Doctor's Journal Entry for August 6, 1945" -- is one of the best pieces in the book. Third, "In Other Places", contains poems inspired by China and California. The fourth section, "Quatrains", is comprised of twenty quatrains, many of them playful and witty. The final section, "Meditations of the Heart", includes ten contemplative poems, among them the title poem, "All You Who Sleep Tonight", which serves as a sort of benediction.

The poems are short; all but eight are less than a page. As I said earlier, they are accessible; one doesn't need a gaggle of haruspices or literary critics to glean some meaning from Delphic utterances. Too many, however, are rather trite. Seth employs moderate structure and all but two of the poems feature end rhyme. I like structure and rhyme, but too often in ALL YOU WHO SLEEP TONIGHT they are not particularly subtle and therefore they impart a vague stodginess.

I will exit with one of the quatrains, entitled "God's Love":

God loves us all, I'm pleased to say--
Or those who love him anyway--
Or those who love him and are good.
Or so they say. Or so he should.

All you who sleep tonight
Far from the ones you love,
No hand to left or right
And emptiness above -
Know that you aren't alone
The whole world shares your tears,
Some for two nights or one,
And some for all their years.

Vikram Seth is a poet par excellence. For each one who has savored his Suitable boy or An equal music or From Heaven's Lake or The Golden Gate, this collection of poems offers another set of witty, candid, lyrical and highly artistic writing. The poet writes about love in all forms, and poems are short and beautiful, the one mentioned here my perennial favorite!

Who is this Steven Hupp, who complains of Seth's "lockstep meter and corny rhymes"? Just because so many people now write "poetry" that is just prose with random line-breaks doesn't mean that genuine verse is contemptible. Seth combines elegance with rare sensitivity in a way that few modern poets can do.

His poems tell of places and moments of pain, but they are of the culture and cultures of life. Reading the title poem one can only nod their head, while Lithuania will make you shake, Mistaken you will blush and Telephone will make you laugh...and sigh.
Try it and see if you don't!
