Michael Hofmann places Friedrich Hölderlin among the immortals. The German poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) unquestionably belongs in the intense company of Shelley, Kleist, Novalis, Lenz and Büchner - even though (it was his misfortune) his life was twice as long as any of theirs. When he was two, his father died; a beloved stepfather when he was nine. In places, Hamburger's English lines are half as long again as Hölderlin's German; dull modifiers and synonyms seem to tread water; the German quite regularly has proverbial force and compression, the English (one has to say) hardly ever.

The German lyric poet John Christian Friedrich Hölderlin was born in 1770. Admired for his ability to re-create the forms of classical Greek poetry in German verse, Holderlin also completed the novel Hyperion. Holderlin studied theology at the University of Tubingen, where he obtained a Master's degree. As a young man he worked as a tutor, including in the house of a wealthy Frankfurt banker, where he and his employer's wife, Susette, fell in love. This is an excellent book. It is important to understand that Holderlin's poetry is complex and it interpretation is highly conflicted. Hamburger represents a position which views his poetry as secular and liberal, independent of Heidigger's assessment and interpretation. This affects his translations, but since the German is available, one has the ability to test his results. Michael Tan Creti

Arrived on time and brand new paperback as described.
This 4th edition of the late Michael Hamburger’s translations are considered some of the best ever. I only wish Holderlin’s Sophocles was here! For that one has (equally good) the translation of David Constantine : Holderlin’s Sophocles, BloodAxe Books, 2001

The translations are excellent. the print is pleasant, the margins wide. It is best also to read some other translations, if your German isn't good.

Holderlin and Rilke are my favorites from the many good German poets.
