Elena Díaz Björkquist is a retired educator who taught California students at elementary and high school levels and at a state university. Currently she is an educational consultant. She and her husband Kurt, recently moved back to Arizona. Having grown up in the small mining town described in "Suffer Smoke" many years ago, Elena Bjorkquist's stories and writing style were a perfect compliment for a "stroll down memory lane". The days of mining towns where the "company" owned all the homes, businesses and controlled the schools is, fortunately, fading but there was also plenty of magic to be found.

Suffer Smoke was one of the banned books from the Chicano Studies Program at Tucson Unified School District when the program was dismantled by the district at the command of the Arizona State Superintendent of Education. The book is a collection of short stories about Chicanos in the mining town of Morenci, Arizona. The town was destroyed by the mining company in the late 60’s.
