The Breaking Point is a collection of eight short stories by Daphne du Maurier first published in 1959 by Victor Gollancz in the UK and Doubleday in the US. It has also been published under the title The Blue Lenses and Other Stories. The stories were written at a time when du Maurier herself came close to a severe nervous breakdown and reflect her own psychological stress.

Foreword by David Thomson. Du Maurier wrote romances, and she liked to have innocent young heroines. But the romance often veers towards something more like horror-I note that in introducing Jamaica Inn in this series, Sarah Dunant said that the bond between the young woman and. her towering uncle (the real relationship in du Maurier's book) is like that between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. At some time during the work on Jamaica Inn, Hitchcock got an advance look at Daphne's next book-Rebecca. Did he read it himself, or did he get his very shrewd wife, Alma, to analyze it? Who knows?

Du Maurier's stories in this collection, some of them, reminded me of Roald Dahl or Patricia Highsmith.

Shelves: short-stories, british, european, literature, fantasy, 20th-century. Du Maurier's stories in this collection, some of them, reminded me of Roald Dahl or Patricia Highsmith. The Alibi was Dahlesque. A man named James Fenton is suddenly sick of his wife and his staid family life, of cocktail hour with the neighbors, and he resolves to go I'm not a short story "person," so caveat lector. Daphne Du Maurier leaves a note to her readers in the book: "There comes a moment in the life of every individual when reality must be faced.

I had a dream about my migraines and doctors transplanting a new head of an animal and another person told me to be sure to read the short story "The Blue Lenses" from this book and that I would find it particularly interesting. The patient awakes from eye surgery with temporary blue lenses in her eyes that may have some slight side effects, and finds that all people around her have the heads of animals from the animal kingdom--a snake, a dog, etc. Very good story and ending.

I've loved this set of stories since I read it as a kid, not that they're in any way appropriate for a kid.
