Kate raises Megan from eight years old when Kate's sister/Megan's mother passes away from a brain tumor. over the next decade, Kate sacrifices her desire for a relationship and sex to raise Megan and to prevent any potential rejection/hardship the revelation of Kate's true sexual orientation may cause the young girl. as Megan's high school graduation approaches, she earns an internship at a local newspaper under the guidance of Tommie, the local sports editor and noncommittal butch lesbian. Tommie feels certain that Kate is straight and unavailable but this does not keep the burgeoning romantic attraction between them from occurring. by the book's end, they will have their chance to share their feelings or to allow the possibility of love to escape them.

the writing is fine... the plot is simply long drawn and takes far too much time, description and senseless misunderstandings to conclude with a sure love. the reader gets good background of the characters... except for Megan as a person, which would have been helpful after the story unfolds a subplot involving her. that said, pretty standard by-the-book romance happens with moments of heat. I enjoyed RJ Layer's "Judge Me Not" more than this one and wish she added an epilogue to this book to share if the couple made it in the end.

SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD....I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand the character development on Tommie was done really well, but the characters of Kate & Megan needed work. At first I enjoyed the somewhat slow build to a relationship but as others have stated the two main characters have not even acknowledged their feelings towards one another until nearly the end of the book. The niece Megan has a secret of her own which we the readers don't even get to explore. The reader finds out what it is, but it is not discussed amongst the characters. I got really frustrated with the near misses between Tommie & Kate. Tommie didn't even question why Kate kept her secret from HER after all that time of becoming such close friends. The ending seemed rushed. I really wanted to give this more than a 3 star rating because I enjoyed the storyline & characters but the romantic pacing and some of the characters motives needed work. I do look forward to reading more from this author.

The idea of this story caught my attention to begin with. From the description, I thought I would really enjoy this book. Unfortunately, I found it rather long and at times dragging; very predictable. The one highlight is that I liked the characters and their devotion to each other. I guess I was just expecting more... This is the first story I believe for this author. So with that being said, I will try Layer again. I think she will get better!

I liked the characters and their personal stories. However, having to get to within 10 pages of the end for the main characters to finally admit their feelings for each other was too much for me. I found myself skipping paragraphs halfway through due to the forced situations and tiresome angst. And the abrupt end was a bit jarring. Nice premise and emotional connections, but a difficult read.

I really enjoyed this book! The author did a great job developing these characters. It was easy to love and route for Kate and Tommie. The author also did a great job with showing Tommie's growth during the book. My only complaint was that I would have liked to see the two get together sooner than they did. I would have liked to see more f them as a couple. Overall, a great read.

I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them tremendously. This story was very slow moving and both main characters were made out to be timid. I don't like to read about women who are mousey. I would recommend this author but this book not so much.

First book I've read by this author. I will be reading more. I hope there can be a sequel. Would like to know how Aunt Kate will respond to niece when she finds out she's gay. Very enjoyable.
While I enjoyed the main characters Tommie and Kate, I ages with another reviewer that the book suffered by not having them at least a acknowledge their attraction to each other or Megan earlier. The book is more than 80 percent complete before any acknowledgments occur. I also felt that Megan
