The lives of three generations of Cuban-American women sharing a home in Miami are chronicled in this engaging first novel. Cuca, the matriarch, is a zealous believer in the spirits she consults on a daily basis. Adela is her cosmetologist daughter--and a sensuous lover of life and the lottery. Adela's daughter Maribel, a young woman making her way in corporate America, has been exiled from the world of spirits and dreams. When Maribel's son Victor is born, the three women must confront the inextricable ties that make them a family as they bond together to care for this fragile infant--and each other. Lyrical, vibrant, and deeply touching, The Chin Kiss King is testimony to the resilient spirit of women and a haunting meditation on the meaning of faith and the power of love to redeem and transform.
grand star
The author's attention and description to detail made me feel like I was there with the characters. Although I am not Cuban and did not grow up in Miami, I have lived there for many years and could easily relate to the characters and their experiences.
As an aside, Ana attended my book club meeting, which enhanced the experience. She is very approachable and down to earth and shared some of her family history and how it impacted and influenced how she approached the novel.

Definitely from the heart. a love story about three generation of women and their love of and their fight to save a severely handicapped child.Beautifully poetic verse. Ana Veciana's writing always slays me and I look forward to reading the writing of this superb columnist every week in the Miami Herald.

PS: Would also recommend her book "Birthday Parties in Heaven: Thoughts on Love, Life, Grief, and Other Matters of the Heart It's also truly lovely.

A heartwarming story about three generations of cuban women living in the USA. The youngest gives birth to a child with severe handicapps. The story follows the three women from prenatal to after the baby is born and tells the story of how they all deal with what is going on. It was like being a fly on the wall watching humanity face the uncontrollable.

“The Chin Kiss King”, is not overly sentimental- but it is a sad story sparkled with inspiring lightness.

After years and years of reading, I am always amazed when I can be pleasantly caught of guard by an exquisite new style of compostion. Ana Suarez's writing is like symphonic music. The poetic verse is brilliant. The story, a child born with severe handicaps, and the three women who fight to see him through his short, but meaningful journey, captures your heart and never lets it go. I have a dear friends who went through a very similar situation with the birth of their son, and having been with them, watching the joy and the agony combine in a universal way to teach us all, I commend, Ms. Suarez on capturing this situation perfectly. This is truly beautiful writing with such quality of depth. An emotional but transforming read!

I was so looking forward to a well written Cubano tale. But this book did not provide that. It was a struggle to finish bc the novel is laced with ramblings. It just never seemed to flow and the mystical aspects seemed out of place and implausible. I had to skip chapter 19 entirely for those reasons.

Maribel's boss, Caleb, seemed to be just thrown into the mix early on with no prior history revealed.

In general, major details were left out and the novel did not tie everything together. Loose ends abound.

Very disappointing...

I am in awe of Ana Veciana's mastery of the language. Her prose is sheer poetry.
The story is filled with pathos and hope and discovery. I couldn't put it down and
finished it through blurred vision from tears at the end.
This is an absolutely amazing novel. It uses a mixture of contemporary fiction and magical realism to convey the impact of the birth of a severely disabled child on three generations of seemingly ordinary women. In their struggle to love, understand, and care for the child, they come to love, understand and care for each other. It shows how ordinary people can become extraordinary when facing adversity. The tragic becomes transcendent.
