Maxxed Out ebook

by David Collins

For writer David Collins, things are not so rosy. His novels didn't sell. His marriage fell apart. Scrabbling for a livelihood, he's turned to ghostwriting.

For writer David Collins, things are not so rosy. When he gets the gig to crank out Maxx's next bestseller, he regards the assignment as nothing more than an easy payday. But something happens. The storyteller in Collins takes over, and he realizes that this isn't one more hack job. It may be his last chance to write something of real value, reclaim his battered self-respect, and win back the ex-wife he still loves.

In this meta-novel, Collins offers a scathingly funny work that skewers the ego-driven, power-obsessed world of the Big Deal.

Just when we really need it, a scathingly funny novel that skewers the ego-driven, morally bankrupt world of The Big Deal

Billionaire Robert Maxx is a king in the world of real estate. Prestigious buildings bear his name, the press treats him like royalty, and beautiful women are thrilled to be seen on his arm. Ruthless, bullying, vengeful, and yet, at times, improbably endearing, Maxx both repels and fascinates.

For writer David Collins, things are not so rosy. His novels didn't sell. His marriage fell apart. Scrabbling for a livelihood, he's turned to ghostwriting.

Against the all-too-real background of a cratering economy and the end of easy money, things start to fall apart for Maxx. As it becomes clear that his mighty empire was built on lies, hucksterism, and dubious accounting, the stage is set for deadly conflict between a fallen idol desperate to conceal the truth and a writer obsessed with an inside story that only he can tell.

A great "insider" story, with a main character who's an easy target, and readily recognizable ... but the narrator is charming, as well.

The author needs a gig. An opportunity arises to ghost a memoir for a Donald Trump clone. Sounds like fun and easy money. He is caught up in the "Trump" organization which is not a fun loving group.

Along the way we look into his personal life and gradually uncover the reality of the Tycoon. Not difficult to decide whose side you are on.

It is a fast moving adventure and a "hard to put down" read. The story is involving and the writing professional and facile.

Strong recommendation from this book lover.

David Collins (the hero and author of this novel) has penned a story ripped from the headlines and torn from the tabloids. Robert Maxx is a full-blown narcissistic bully (think Donald Trump) who you'll love to hate, but you'll want to have a drink with Collins and commiserate over his attempt to ghost-write a bestseller for Maxx. The writing is clever and smooth, and the plot rockets along, ricocheting between Maxx's dirty dealings and Collins' complicated love life. With great characters and a business context, this was one of the few novels my husband and I both enjoyed!

HOORAY for David Collins and his debut novel, Maxxed Out. It's a screech-out-loud howler of a book set amidst the all too familiar, but perhaps not so understood world, of financial shenanigans that we're now living through. The house of cards built on quicksand, the boom and bust of the real estate market featuring David Collins (yes, the author. Or is he? I have my doubts.) as the ghostwriter for Robert Maxx, the fiendish mogul, a look-alike stand in for Donald Trump.

As they say in poker, read 'em and weep. In the case of Maxxed Out, read it and laugh -- right up to the deliciously conceived climax serving Robert Maxx his comeuppance, and serving it cold -- just as vengeance should be.

I inhaled this book in three sittings, and was sorry to see it end. It's timely, funny, and smart--a bit of "Devil Wears Prada," with some "Wall Street" mixed in. I felt like I learned a fair bit about Big Business and the Big Egos that got us into the fix we're in--while being completely entertained.

No spoilers here, but the basic story is this. The hero is a nice-guy ghostwriter you can't help but root for. The villain is an arrogant billionaire who reminded me an awful lot of Donald Trump--a perfect example of a man you love to hate. Throw in a really sweet and unusual love story as well as a cast of totally believable New York characters--including a gorgeous TV actress and a bombshell business-news anchorwoman who'll do anything to get a story--and you've got a great read to look forward to.

My boyfriend and I both loved "Maxxed Out" -- a sharp, funny, fast-paced novel that hooks you with the character of Robert Maxx--a Donald Trump-type real estate tycoon whose huge ego, huge debts, and dubious ethics go a long way in explaining the mess we're in. But the book's real payoff is getting to know the narrator/ghostwriter David Collins--a classic underdog with a thorny exterior and a heart of gold. Who doesn't love an underdog? Collins is both insightful on the subjects of wealth and power, and romantic and tender in his personal life. With no money in the bank, a mortgage coming due, and a beloved ex-wife who needs expensive medical treatment, Collins believes in the power of storytelling to see him through. You'll be rooting for him every step of the way!

If you're a big fan of Laurence Shames then you'll love this book!
There's a very good reason for that but I'll let you figure out why
MAXXED OUT has all the elements of a must read. A villian whose fortune, like his ego, is built on hype and greed. The talented writer who shepards us into that part of the business world which is at once revolting yet fascinating. And a tender romance, as pure and loving as anyone's best fantacy. David Collins reassures us with his self-deprecating, wry humor that virtue can prevail. Treat yourself!!
