The Coffins of Little Ho.

Timothy Schaffert’s new small town novel features a lot of plot, lightly served. He uses that gift to excellent effect in his fourth book, The Coffins of Little Hope. He concocts an imaginary series of young adult books that have supposedly taken the world by storm. They’re known as because of the two plucky sisters who are their heroines. The institution that Miranda and Desiree have made famous sounds almost as well known as Hogwarts. But it’s Rothgutt’s Asylum for Misguided Girls. Mr. Schaffert’s own narrative drops a number of nicely mischievous references to the 10 books in the Miranda-and-Desiree series.

THE COFFINS OF LITTLE HOPE takes it title from the last installment of a fictional children's book series. This imaginary series seems to have the runaway popularity of the Harry Potter books though the gothic perils its heroines constantly find themselves in seem to have more in common with "The Series Of Unfortunate Events" books that had quite an impact on the children's literature market a few years ago. Anyway the "coffins" book (the last in the series) is so wildly anticipated the publisher has to have it printed by small printing presses in remote locations so nothing "leaks" before publication day. One of these presses has been owned by a small town newspaper publishing family for generations in rural Nebraska. Essie the eighty-three year old matriarch of this family as well as the local obituary writer is the narrator and central character of THE COFFINS OF LITTLE HOPE.

Essie soon introduces us to her own family which consists of two grandchildren, a senile sister and a teenaged great granddaughter. Through Essie we also come to know many other members of the surrounding community. Daisy is the most mysterious character. An employee of the printing press she has presumably lived by herself on an eighty acre farm since the death of her father. However one day Daisy makes an amazing announcement. She claims she has a home birthed, home schooled young daughter no one knew about and the child has been kidnapped by an aerial photographer named Elvis. The story is soon picked up by the national media and becomes the latest talk show/tabloid sensation al a JonBenet or Natalie Halloway. Some doubt always exists if this missing daughter "Lenore" that no one had ever seen or heard about before is real or a figment of Daisy's imagination but that just adds to the fevered speculation around the tale. Daisy's story and the "Little Coffins" plot eventually intersect but not in a particularly dramatic way.

THE COFFINS OF LITTLE HOPE is written using a witty style and includes elements of satire as well as the surreal thoughout. The book is not as tight as it could be and one particular storyline that features a deceased Nebraska writer who seems to be modeled on Willa Cather seems forced and not a good fit with the major plotlines. On the plus side plucky Essie makes a sympathetic narrator and all of the characters are reasonably rendered. This is a good quick read which will especially be appreciated by those originally from small rural towns that are struggling to survive.

This is a fabulous book!!! Schaffert is one of the best writers working ... His stories are always full of odd characters with rich emotional lives.

I liked the story and found the narrator very interesting. I gave the book 4 stars because the story stopped without actually ending.

The write up of the book sounded good. I kept waiting for it to get better and it never did. Seems that it is a book "about nothing". Wish i would have gotten it at the library rather than buying it.

After reading this book, I'm left with mixed feelings. The book has three separate strands of plot -- the story of the narrator's family relationships, the publication in the last of a series of gothic children's books, and the disappearance of a local girl who may, in fact, have never existed. The book raised some fascinating issues about how stories shape our perception of reality (and whether reality even matters in the face of a good story). It was also beautifully written. Unfortunately, the separate strands of story never really came together in the end.

This was just a nice easy read. No suprises or twists, but kept me entertained.
I would recommend it for a good read.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author really captured life in small midwest town. I loved reading a story told through the eyes of an older lady. The mystery was pretty interesting too. Problem is, the book just kind of ended in the middle of the story. Im sure the author was trying to make some dramatic point, but seriously, write us an ending next time.
