The book stares you down, dares you to laugh. Even the most willing reader may have trouble initially entering Smith's fever-pitched world. Once you're hooked, though, you're in it for the duration. This powerfully imagined tale of a contemporary Bonnie and Clyde displays Smith's (Chimney Rock, 1993, et. furious overplotting and near-genius for lyrical intensity in just about equal measure.

Three Delays is Smith's sixth novel and as far as I'm concerned his best. I've read his previous novels and loved Shine Hawk, Lives of the Dead, and Cheap Ticket to Heaven-all works of brazen energy and soaring prose, filled with enough images of such originality and depth as to make other writers seem stingy with their imagination. Three Delays has all that and more. It is funny (and I don't just mean the snappy dialogue Smith is known for) and full of heart!

In his fifth novel, Cheap Ticket to Heaven, Smith opens up the prison gates and looses on the world a pair of natural-born killers that would have made Bonnie and Clyde proud. Jack and Clare are robbers, killers, and lovers. Intelligent and not unregenerate, but very deadly, they cut a bloody swath through the Midwest and South, all the while in search of some higher truths - running existential errands - they can live by and die for. What they find at the end of their journey is a vision of surpassing beauty, and subtle proof that not every criminal must follow the well-trod path to hell.
