The scriptwriter has a case of writer's block, so the television series "Heartland" is in danger of being cancelled until a mysterious man appears who may be the hero or have other motives.

This is the second time time I've read this book and I loved it just as much the second time. The premise of the story is that a fictional character comes to life in the setting of his fictional life - a movie set. while he tries to figure out how he got where he is, the rest of the cast and crew are thrilled because he is better than the man who played his fictional character. He goes on to make the show better and that leads to a movie opportunity for the cast. This sounds wonderful to everyone involved but at the same time, someone behind the scenes is trying to destroy the show and the set so it can be used for seedier purposes. I love the battle between good and evil and the people bonding together over a common goal. I love a faith based book that doesn't beat me over the head with preaching but shows how to be Christlike through great characters. This book is thought provoking about our own search about who we are in our own settings. Enjoyable and entertaining.

I found "Heartland" to be enjoyable and with a little more meat it could have been one of the best books I've ever read. Unlike L. Lorton's review I actually read the entire book, understood why JayJay spoke in cliches, and realized that Hollywood's movie business is far from a Christian industry, as the book clearly shows.
The secondary characters were interesting and well written. JayJay however seemed to be a bit more troubled then I believe he should have been. I realize Bunn was trying to make him human but let's face it, he wasn't. Except for JayJay's internal turmoil's the fantasy aspect of the story could have continued throughout the book but it wasn't and if it had the possibilities could have been endless. There should have been a few surprises written in at the end but that didn't happen either. In fact some of the story didn't have an ending i.e., what happened to the problem the town was experiencing? What we get is a fairly straight story (even though JayJay is a fictional character), good versus evil, Godly standards beating worldly ones.
Not preachy to those in Christ but to your average close-minded unbeliever they may find the obvious Christian references and lifestyles a bit to loving and kind. If you want a "mainstream" book you may want to look somewhere else but if you want an enjoyable story and an eye-opening look into Hollywood I recommend this book.

I love Davis Bunn's books. But, I have to say this is my favorite! I have read 'Heartland' a number of times and I am starting it again. Whenever I want a light, uplifting, stress free, story -- I think of this book.
Some may call it simplistic and preachy; I call it refreshing and delightful. This is a story that reminds us that there really IS such a thing as a hero, and also that there can be a 'happy ever after'!

A very good story. An interesting twist to the beginning with a great middle and ending. My only beef would be that whatever amount was paid for a proof reader and editing was surely too much! I understand the justifying of the lines, but to not give a space after a comma before starting a new word and putting a space within words is ridiculous. Ebooks should be of no less quality than the printed.

Loved it!

This book arrived in great shape. It had a confusing start, but as it began to build, I could not lay it down.

It is a Christian thriller with plenty of action, and good moral content.

Just how did JayJay get there? We'll never know. But Heartland needed a savior and he was just what the doctor ordered. This was so much fun to read, I didn't want it to end.
I read a lot of audiobooks. I've read at least one other book by the author. Some of my favorite fiction authors include Ted Dekker, Stephen R. Lawhead, Robert Ludlum, Frank Peretti, Randy Singer, Randy Alcorn, Louis L'Amour, John Grisham, with a fairly wide scope in genre. I had a hard time listening to this book. I just couldn't connect. It felt like a waste of time.
