Whitethorn Woods is a 2006 novel by the Irish author Maeve Binchy. The plot centers around a supposedly miraculous well dedicated to Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, located in a grotto overgrown with whitethorn bushes in the woods next to an Irish town called Rossmore. While the parish priest is frustrated by people's allegiance to the well rather than the church, the novel traces the stories of numerous people who find inspiration through the well in many different ways.
Whitethorn Woods book.
We were on a kibbutz in the Negev Desert for the summer. I was the first person from Rossmore to do such an adventurous thing, head for the Middle East and pick oranges and pluck chickens. that way back then poor Canon Cassidy said that though it was a great thing to go to the Holy Land and walk where Our Lord had walked, I would have to be careful that I didn't lose my faith when I met so many people of other beliefs.
When a new highway threatens to bypass the town of Rossmore and cut through Whitethorn Woods, everyone has a passionate opinion about whether the town will benefit or suffer. But young Father Flynn is most concerned with the fate of St. Ann’s Well, which is set at the edge of the woods and slated for destruction.
I've been a fan of Maeve Binchy for a couple years now, and Whitethorn Woods just enforced that. This is the story of the people of Rossmore, and their belief (or disbelief)in St. Ann's well in Whitethorn Woods, that may or may not have spiritual powers behind it. When a new highway threatens the woods, and the well, the citizens of Rossmore are split between those wanting to save the well, and those looking to make money from selling land in the proposed highway path. Maeve is an expert in character development and dialogue.
