The use of the Cooper Permalens soft contact lens as an extended wear lens for correction of aphakia was investigated in 177 eyes. Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in Anaheim, California, 1979. Received December 13, 1979; revision received July 24, 1980.

The overall success rate for aphakic contact lens wear is related to motivation. It is highest in bilateral cases. Most successful results occur in physically and mentally active individuals, and poorest results in the unilateral alphakic, especially in infancy. Prolonged, or extended wear gives hope to many patients at the extremes of age. The criteria for extended wear is high gas flow materials, perfection in optical finish, and best fitting lens form.

One hundred fifteen eyes of 62 patients were fit with paflufocon-A (Fluoroperm) rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. Thirty of the 52 patients (58%) who completed the study were able to wear the lenses continuously without complications; six (12%) were able to. Patients included myopes, hyperopes, aphakes, and keratoconic and astigmatic patients; the latter patients were fit with bitoric designs for large amounts of corneal astigmatism or front toric designs for residual astigmatism. More severe myopia needs lens powers further from zero (more negative). However, strong eyeglass prescriptions create distortions such as prismatic movement and chromatic aberration. Strongly near-sighted wearers of contact lenses do not experience these distortions because the lens moves with the cornea, keeping the optic axis in line with the visual axis and because the vertex distance has been reduced to zero.

My son is bilateral aphakic, he wears contacts and bifocal glasses. The book shows Jack's mom putting contacts in and how well Jack cooperates. He is 3 years old, and he loves the book!! we read it every night before bed, at least twice.
