Morton in 1846 at the Massachusetts General Hospital led to the widespread introduction of general anesthesia. Infants were considered incapable of perceiving pain; indeed Dr. Abel Pierson stated that infants could sleep insensibly even while undergoing surgery.

My negativity towards this book was greatly enhanced by the obvious lack of integrity of the condition described by "Better World Books". I was to receive a Hard Cover edition in "very good" condition. I actually received the paperback copy in "barely readable" condition. But, I won't bore you with those details. It was written by 18 Pediatric Anesthesiologists, at the University of Toronto, one of the most prestigious Hospitals in the world. I would not expect an 1985 edition to contain current information. Most of the information presented was merely in outline form. Very few details were presented. Some of them were inaccurate, or even below the standards practiced here in the U.S. For example, awake intubations on children would hardly be acceptable procedures in most institutions. The overall philosophy in the management of small children smacks of cruelty,with minimal compassion for their ultimate emotional benefit. Pure rubbish...that's where it ended up.
