About Joanna Fulford. Over six years ago I retired early from teaching at the age of fifty one and took up writing full time. My taste in reading material is eclectic but I particularly enjoy historical fiction - everything from Georgette Heyer and Alison Weir to the Bronte sisters and Emile Zola. I think his Germinal is one of the finest books ever written. The Caged Countess - Joanna Fulford. The story starts with our h meeting the H in a brothel in France, where they rendezvous as spies for England. Neither realise that they are married to each other as they had married 8 years before when the h was only 14 yrs old and the H was only 20. Neither had wanted the marriage and the H had joined the army and not returned to England in that time. The h meanwhile had managed to make an independent life of sorts for herself, expecting nothing of her husband. After an exciting encounter in the brothel, the H decides after discovering that the h is his wife, that he wants to stay married. His wife, on the other hand, is angry and resentful.

The H has been very badly scarred and has lost an eye during the war, he has insecurities and these impact the marriage. Obviously it's not an easy ride but it a satisfying one and I was really rooting for these two. We follow their adventures and how they fall in love, with the conflict in Belgium as a backdrop. It's a good and interesting read.

Claudia and Anthony married 8 years, but never living together. They meet again in a French brothel, both working as spies for England, and not reconizing each other. While traveling to England together, Anthony becomes aware of who Claudia is and falls in love with the caged countess. Claudia figures out who Anthony is while they are working to find the double agent. Delightful Read with a few twist and turns.

I can't tell you how many spy historical romance books I've read where the heroine is just plain, stubbornly stupid and decides to defy common sense and good reasoning to get herself into danger...leading me to question how the heroine has stayed alive as a lousy spy. It also makes her role as a spy unbelievable. After reading the premise of this book, I thought exactly that but Claudia proved to be smarter than that. (Thank God!) The author doesn't make Claudia out to be some amazing spy who is unbelievably good at everything. Instead, we enter the book with a tension-filled scene where she is a bit rattled and helpless. I love that it is more realistic here. I love that the author also sets up the scene to be very sexy between the heroine and hero. As we move further along the plot, I was also wary of stupid secrets and misunderstandings between the H/H but the insecurities between the H/H was very believable and reasonable. I'm not going to lie... I approached this book with a lot of skepticism on many levels and the author countered them with excellent writing, sensible character actions and behavior, and a great loving relationship between the H/H. I'm just sorry this book hasn't gotten as much attention as some other books out there, which are less deserving of their acclaim. And now, I'm off to read another of Ms. Joanna Fulford's books!

Started out really well! Really sad, because it was a great plot, but in the end it fizzled out. Not sure if I will read another one from this author in the future.
