Eighty-nine patients were randomized to preoperative tune-up either in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) (group 1) or the preinduction room (group 2) or to control (group 3). The tune-up consisted of fluid loading, afterload reduction, and/or inotropic support to achieve predetermined endpoints.

Compiled of easily readable chapters, which are narrow in focus. This allows one to read on a topic without becoming overwhelmed with a large scope of material. Well organized and thought out. More in depth and focesed on particular problems of critically ill surgical patients that other popular texts.

The editors of this textbook, presumably on the management of surgical ICU patients, have missed the mark. Many chapters in this text are written with no thought whatsoever to the differences that are faced in the management of critically ill peri-operative patients. For instance, the chapter on Myocardial Infarction addresses coronary plaque rupture as the sole relevant etiology of MI in the critical care setting. At least in the surgical ICU, and I suspect in the MICU as well, low flow states play a major factor in the development of ischemia and the propagation of thrombosis leading to MI. No mention is made of this phenomenon at all. This is followed by a treatise on the management of these patients with thrombolytics and antiplatelet therapy with no regard for the fact that a number of these patients are post surgical or trauma patients and may need to have an alternative treatment plan at least considered. This is only one example in a text that repeatedly fails to consider the patient population it is proposing to help clinicians manage. I wouldnt recommend this text to anyone proposing to use it to learn the fundamentals of surgical critical care. i cannot speak to its validity in general critical care, but that is not the Title of the Text.
