With the publication of his first novel in 1975, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, Jeffrey Archer established himself as a consummate storyteller. In fact, The Washington Post hailed him as A storyteller in the class of Alexandre Dumas, and The Mail on Sunday acclaimed him as probably the greatest storyteller of our age. 36 short stories by j. .It combines three volumes of Archer's short stories and contains several very enjoyable pieces. Archer is better at the short story than the novel, always dreaming up some very inventive ideas. This is my first Jeffrey Archer book, and if it hadn't been for a certain person, I might not have ever known of JA.

An English lord requires one more chess piece to complete a set that would be worth a fortune. Another man, an accountant, realizes he’s achieved nothing in his life—and sets out to make a fortune before he retires. And then there is the author’s own favorite,“In the Eye of the Beholder,” about astar athletewho has a fateful run-in with a three-hundred-pound woman. Some of these twelve stories were inspired by the two yearsJeffrey Archer spent in prison, including“Don’t Drink the Water,” the tale of a company chairman who tries to poison his wife while on a trip to St. Petersburg—with unexpected consequences. Witty, suspenseful, sad, surprising, and unforgettable, Cat O’Nine Tales is Jeffrey Archer at his best.

Jeffrey Archer is a great teller of tales. He did have some moral slips in his personal life, for which he went to prison. He used his experiences in prison, and those he met there, as the setting for some of these short stories. Whether the persons he met in prison were factual, or he made them up, is of no consequence. He makes them seem very real and I will chose to believe he really met them. Reader is excellent. Very important.

I don't normally like short stories, but these read like plot lines that didn't have enough "meat" for a full novel -- or they were stories told to him by fellow prisoners that were free-standing. These short stories and the other two short-story books by Archer that I read recently were fun to read. Lots of twists and some great endings.

Very interesting. Some of the stories were published elsewhere. He is a master storyteller and the variety of themes make good mix.

These stories are really fabulous. To read Themis like eaves dropping on people's lives and hearing the real thoughts in their heads and what they are really like instead of just what they let you see. They are stories of everyday people, some nice, some nasty and the predicaments they find themselves in. The only problem is they are over just as I am getting really interested in what happens to them next.
I love short stories. There is no space for fillers and the whole thing, from beginning to end, is just meat. Short stories have the added advantage that they come in small, easily digestible pieces. Jefferey Archer must love his job.
