Von Moltke, 48, succeeds Marcus Schenck, who was appointed Deutsche Bank’s Co-President in early March and who, as previously announced, will oversee the bank’s newly created Corporate & Investment Bank together with Garth Ritchie from July. Von Moltke was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and is a dual citizen of Germany and Australia.

In 1935, after turning down an opportunity to become a judge because the job would require him to join the Nazi P arty, Helmuth James von Moltke (1907–1945) began a practice of his own in Berlin that helped Jews and other persecuted peoples emigrate from Germany. In 1939, von Moltke was drafted into the German counterintelligence service. He witnessed many German human rights abuses and soon became a leader of those opposed to the Nazi P arty. In 1944, von Moltke was arrested by the Gestapo for his anti-Nazi sentiments, sentenced to death, and executed in January 1945.

Helmuth von Moltke was neither a Prussian by birth nor a military officer by basic inclination. His nephew, Helmuth von Moltke (the younger), related that his uncle had told him that he had been forced into the Danish cadet corps and thus had his profession determined for him. He would have preferred, the elder Moltke said, to have studied archaeology and to have become a professor of history. Moltke served in the Danish army until 1822, when he entered Prussian service.

He was the great-grandnephew of Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, the victorious commander in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars, from whom he inherited the Kreisau Estate in Prussian Silesia, now Krzyżowa in Poland.
